Resume and Interview Tips

How to Target Your Resume For Different Positions
By:Anish Majumdar

A typical job search is rarely confined to a single type of position. How do you tailor your resume to suit different positions without completely re-writing it? Use these strategies to save time and maximize results when submitting:

1) START WITH A LARGE, BOLDFACED POSITION TITLE AT THE START OF YOUR RESUME

Many job seekers use this space to insert generalized titles such as "Sales Expert" or "Operational Leader". This is too general to be effective, and only creates confusion for recruiters/hiring managers who review hundreds of resumes daily. Instead, insert the EXACT TITLE of the position you're applying for, such as "Regional Sales Manager" or "Director of Operations". Be sure to change this from submission to submission.

2) CREATE A POSITION-SPECIFIC OPENING PARAGRAPH

Review job postings for the type of position you'd like to submit to. Identify 3-4 in-demand skills which you possess, and craft a paragraph DEMONSTRATING them (ex., building high-performance teams, rapidly resolving issues, and maintaining top-tier Quality standards." Repeat these steps for any other positions you'd like to apply to, and be sure to swap out this section accordingly.

3) STRESS TRANSFERABLE SKILLS FIRST IN YOUR WORK HISTORY

Transferable skills are those which could apply to a wide variety of positions, such as managing budgets, building client relationships, and training/mentoring staff. SUMMARIZE every job you've held in 1-2 sentences, focusing heavily on these skills, followed by specifics. This will go a long ways towards making your work history pertinent when submitting to multiple positions.
