Resume and Interview Tips

How to List Accomplishments on Your Resume
By:Anish Majumdar

Make no mistake: career successes are BY FAR the most important thing hiring agents look for when evaluating a candidate. Here are some proven strategies to bring them to light:

1) AVOID A FREE-FLOATING "ACCOMPLISHMENTS" OR "ACHIEVEMENTS" SECTION AT ALL COSTS

Mashing together career successes spanning multiple positions into a single section is a recipe for disaster. Not only is it confusing and ineffective, but in today's market it's largely perceived by recruiters/hiring managers as a candidate lacking confidence in their entire work history. INTEGRATE successes directly within the pertinent positions.

2) USE BULLETS TO HIGHLIGHT SUCCESSES

A simple rule-of-thumb is to describe responsibilities for a particular position in paragraph form, followed by a "Key Accomplishments" section or similar where you list successes bullet-by-bullet. This draws reader attention while creating a visually pleasing format.

3) SPLIT APART SEPARATE IDEAS

Don't try to take on too much when listing successes. For example a line like, "Optimized network infrastructure, rapidly troubleshooted issues, and ensured on-time and under-budget completion of projects," would work better split apart into separate ideas, with a greater level of DETAIL for each.

4) AVOID BEING PASSIVE WHEN DESCRIBING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

A line like, "New business relationships were created through following up on leads, identifying unique client needs, and delivering proposals," is totally ineffective within the context of a resume. Instead, STRESS ACTION, along the lines of, "Forged highly profitable new client relationships through following up on leads, identifying unique needs, and delivering targeted proposals." See the difference?

5) INCLUDE METRICS WHENEVER POSSIBLE

Hard stats are proof of your ability to succeed in the marketplace. These could be revenue increase figures, customer satisfaction gains, efficiencies, you name it. Include it, and highlight it early (ex. Increased sales 33% Year over Year through...")
