Resume and Interview Tips

A Good Cover Letter Opens the Door
By:Sean McCaffrey

A good cover letter has one objective....earning you an opportunity to interview. Every resume you submit has to be accompanied by a well structured conduit to the position, which is the cover letter. There are many tips on how to write one, yet these two tips are the most important in opening the door to the interview.

Important Tip #1: We all know that a good cover letter is written specifically to each position. How you accomplish this is first by including your ability to integrate key elements from the job posting. Carefully review the posting. What specific terms and requirements are mentioned? Separate the key priorities of the position from fluff and insignificant details. You need to indicate that you are aware of what the employer is looking for and how you possess the desired experience to be successful in the position.

Now that you have the key elements from the job description identified, a good cover letter expands on key strengths to provide more detail on how your skills and experience will address their key problems. Now it is important to line up the appropriate target for your message.

Important tip #2: The tone of your writing helps you raise the bar to separate a good cover letter from an average one. When you read yours, who is at the center of attention in the message? Are you, what you have to offer and what you are looking for at the center of attention? Or is your message focused squarely on your audience by addressing their specific needs and how you are the ideal candidate to solve their problem? If a job is open it is because the organization has a problem. This problem is costing money and causing stress on processes and people. A good cover letter addresses this issue and offers a proper resolution to solve the problem. With that in mind, make sure your message is not about you specifically, yet how you will benefit the employer.

Employers have an ego. They want to know you are specifically competing for their position and not just applying for any job. It needs to be clear in the writing that this is not a blanket and undirected campaign.

By integrating these important tips, you will make a positive impression on the employer and put you in position to advance the sale. Taking the necessary time to carefully constructing a specifically targeted and problem solving letter separates you from your competitors and moves it from an average submission to a great submission.
