Resume and Interview Tips

After The Job Interview
By:Lawrence Stoltz

So, youve gone through the achingly private and difficult task of opening yourself up to the dreaded face-to-face job interview. Now, you get to go home, change your clothes, and . . . What? Do you wait by the phone, and hope to hear from the prospective employer for the next several days? Do you grab the newspaper, or go online and find some more places to get a job? What on earth comes next?

Why dont you sit down and write out a wonderful thank-you note to the employer you just saw. A what, you ask? Yes, you heard me right a thank-you note. Now, why on earth would you do that, especially if you are not even sure you are in the running to get the position you just applied for. Lets hop on the example train, shall we?

Let us pretend for once that we are the employer. You have three resumes in front of you A, B, and C. You really liked A and Bs attitude, so you cancel out C. Pausing to take a break, you reach for your daily stack of mail. Whats this? you wonder, as you pull out a letter from resume A applicant. In it, you find that applicant A is thanking you for speaking with him / her about the job position. Well, geez, you think. This person must really want the job! You smile to yourself, and quickly slide resume B to the side. Reaching for the phone, you find the number for applicant A, and call to offer him / her the job.

The note of thanks is meant to be just that a note! Not a long, drawn out letter that reiterates your excellent professional skills for the job position that was what the interview has already established! You are just trying to accomplish four small goals: One Impress the interviewer with your thoughtfulness (yeah, yeah, you are kind of kissing the big man / womans behind!). Two Give yourself that possible winning edge over other prospective applicants. Three Shove YOUR name back into the head of the interviewer. Four -- The underlying idea of the note is to say, Hey, look at this! I really want this job! Getting your name recalled, and having an employer constantly thinking about you for the position is certainly not a bad thing. A note of appreciation costs you very little, and leaves more than just a smile on a persons face. If you are interested in the job, then it should be worth it!
