Resume and Interview Tips

Resume Tips for Font, Size, & Type
By:Lauren Romano

It is not only nerve-wracking applying for jobs and going on interviews, but it also can be stressful trying to perfect your resume. No matter how good your qualifications are, your resume, if not aesthetically pleasing, can leave you without job interviews. To increase your chances of having your resume considered, you can format the font, size and type to make it look as professional as possible.

Enlarge Your Name and Headings
Your name and the headings should be a size 16 font. Any larger and they will look out of balance with the rest of your resume. In addition, if the font is too large, the name and headings will take up extra space you could be using for your qualifications.

Write in a Size 12 Font
Although your name and headings should be a larger size, the rest of your resume should be in a size 12 font. A font that is any larger does not make your qualifications easier to see; rather, it makes your resume look bizarre. A size 12 font is the perfect size so that the reviewer can see it without a problem but without the size being overwhelming.

Use Appropriate Font
Many fonts that are available for use are too elaborate and, in some cases, difficult to read. Simple fonts, such as Times New Roman, should be used because they are easy to read, format without a problem and look professional. Although the other fonts may seem prettier, using those could be what gets your resume tossed to the side without so much as a second glance.

Use Black Font Color
Your resume will stand out if you use any other color, but it will not stand out in a positive way. Your qualifications, and not your font color, should be what stands out and makes a positive impact. Black font is standard; any other color looks unprofessional and childish.

Use Bold Type Sparingly
Boldface should be used wherever you have increased font size, for example, on your headings and your name. The bold helps to highlight where one section starts from another. It draws your eye to the relevant sections, but if used in the middle of a paragraph, it looks out of place. Do not worry about bolding your significant accomplishments. If your resume is formatted correctly, the reviewer will see them.
