in my opinion it's because the bottom line here is 'work' parttime for a fulltime salary, local of course. And when I say 'work' I mean speak standard English that is of the simplest variety while clowning around in front of your students.
I suspect that in the Middle-East, for example, one couldn't get away with that. China is a paradise for foreigners who wish to do jack all for a middling salary. At the end of the day they're laughing their heads off all the way to the karaoke bar once a week. They're getting what they want, but are you?

You make a lot of fair and valid points, and I would like to answer, even though my free time for posting on these boards is limited (reading, studying chinese, teaching, watching movies, socializing with girls et al!)

Of course it is part time work for a fulltime salary, and local salary at that, you are right.

It is also not work as would be expected in the middle east. I did a year in the gulf, and they do expect you to knuckle down. That's not to say visits to the pub are out on weekdays, lots partake, doesn't stop them...nor is partying in dubai out each weekend if that is what you like (although your pocketbook may swiftly become thinner!)

So to answer I would say I am getting what I want, but as I don't like ktv bars or chinese nightclubs, I laugh my head off all the way to a nice restaurant once a week, and sleep all weekend.

Good enough?

Cheers and happy mid week,
SMGS
