They had signed a contract with you. Between that time and the time you arrived, they decided to employ a late applicant for that job instead of you. Presumably either because he'll work for a lesser salary than you'd have been paid, or in their eyes he'll do a better job than you, or indeed both reasons. Most definitely not the way Western employers hire jobseekers! But that's the way many Chinese employers in EFL opreate!
