Re: EJ Canada College Vancouver BC - ESL school review

Hello Concerned Teacher.

I read your review of EJ College with great interest, I taught there for the last 6 months of 2003, and I must agree, at that time, despite the cramped facilities and lack of fresh air (!) it was a dynamic fun place for everyone.

I'm pretty certain you would have been there at the same time, so now I'm trying to remember teacher names.... but I'm drawing a blank.

I hope you'll drop me a line, I'm interviewing at another school downtown this week after taking a few years off to pursue other interests.

Best wishes,
Stuart

EJ Canada College Vancouver BC - ESL school review

When I first started working for EJ several years ago, it was a great place. Very friendly staff and teachers and the students were great. The teachers were always concerned for the students and their education and well being. Then the director lost interest in the school and the students. Those teachers and myself were treated poorly and saw that the students were suffering because of the director's lack of professionalism and leadership. Many students started to complain yet these fell on deaf ears. The teachers tried to make suggestions on how to improve things for everyone and these were meet with disregard. Many of the teachers had been with the school for 2-3 years by the time I rejoined the school after leaving and then being rehired. As student numbers decreased during low season, we were told someone would be laid off. Being the newest teacher, I knew this would be me and was told so. The next day I came to work and was told I would not be let go as I was a "popular" teacher. The teacher with the most seniority, who tried to make the place better for students, was let go under the guise of "complaints". Well, since then, all of the long term teachers have resigned either on their own or by strong suggestions to do so. The director of the school does not like teachers who try to stand up for students' when their needs are not being met. I decided it was time to leave such a negative working environment. I really enjoyed the students and the school had great potential. However with the current director, who rarely even comes into the school, it is a place of employment that should be avoided. As well, students who are wishing to improve their English skills should check out another school as they will only be disappointed with what EJ has to offer.
