Re Shenyang Red River Center / Institute of Engineering

They now have wifi which is fast and automatic VPN which is awesome!

Is this some kind of a joke? The reality couldn't possibly be further from the truth.

Oh wow I'm an idiot. Granted. Shenyang is cold and shitty, can't dispute that.

I posted that a while ago and felt a bit bad cous it was a bit harsh and the staff really did go way out of their way to help me out on a few occasions. Didnt deserve such a harsh reviews

We did have a really good time but I think it's cous of the people there. We were lucky and apparently had the best bunch of teachers like ever.

I imagine it would be a protruding grim and dismal place if there a bunch of shitty people which is quite possible cous the recruitment lady is not the sharpest or the most diligent.

Anyway. Food is a big plus and the fact that there are three universities in a very small radius means there are a crap load of students and enough international students to have some good times with:

Re many pay 7500-9000 now

The cafeteria food in Normal university is probably the best I had in China anywhere. And the cheapest.

Hopefully they raised their pay as well.

The food is private vendors all put in a space of two levels. It's like having 50 restaurant/street food venders in a small space at student prices. Not cafeteria food.

many pay 7500-9000 now

Do you want western teachers from the developed centre of the world to eat the dog food served to students ?

Are you kidding me

they serve better food in UK jails that chinese industrial slop offered in schools

And universities raised their wages by 15 percent last year

should be 7500-9000 for 16 hours

You are responding to your own post of two years ago on exactly the same date of the same month.

Hilarious!!!

Well I had a great experience with the school.

Another 'selfless' advertising effort during the recruitment period for FTs for the next academic year.

Shenyang is a cold, gritty and gloomy Chinese city. For a new NES FT, if you are from Canada or Scotland and have been a smoker for a decade or more, you might survive.

Well I had a great experience with the school.

Granted they not perfect but who is in China?

The administration cares for you, even if there are extra things you need like if someone rips you off. The staff will go way out of their way to help you get justice.

The area isn't too bad, over the road is Normal University which had an awesome cafeteria - dirt cheap and a huge selection of tasty food. You can survive off of about 300RMB if you really scrape which is crazy in China.

The apartment is fully furnished and you pay for nothing. They now have wifi which is fast and automatic VPN which is awesome! Not sure if it's still there, know China is cracking down on it and it is a government school.

You do earn less but such is the way in Chinese universities.

Yeah. Crystal is a bit lazy but she does what needs to be done and as other people have said be sure to be nice to her cous she is pretty touchy. But there are other people who will bend over backwards to help you out and you can always go over her head if she's been silly.

If you have any issues about the accommodation don't be afraid to speak to the dean who is really cool, if he's still there Tom is boss. I know the other lady Betty is gone, she was nice but didn't do much. Tom got shit done, no small talk. One of the best Chinese iv known in China.

Yeah....don't know what else to say but if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.

They are generally very good to their teachers.

Re Shenyang Red River Center / Institute of Engineering

The reason they so secretive is because they offering you 1000rmb less than they should. Sounds odd. I worked for them for a year and there was some funny business with the cash but I think that's pretty standard for China.

It would seem incompetence is the biggest factor here, they not too dodgy from my experience but will take you for a ride if you not clued up so here the bare facts minus all the drama.

Shenyang institute of engineering.

Anyone considering taking a job here needs to consider a few things.

Shenyang Institute of engineering is an institute, not a university. Just bare that in mind.

The accommodation is acceptable but just be aware that everything in the apartment is controlled by the school and is not as advertised.

The Internet is appalling, the walls are dirty and the appliances are heavily outdated.

I am not a teacher by profession but was just using the school as a place to stay while I sourced and exported products from factories.

Being a qualified human resource manager I have this inherent need to try improve things for the people around me.

This took me all the way thought to the top where the problem was identified.

It seems to filter down from the top as it usually does and it looks like the Dean is the issue.

He has been accepting an incredibly low level of efficiency and competence for over a decade now and these people control your living environment.

This did directly effect my life in a big way is it would yours.

It would be a good idea to find out exactly what is legal and what isn't if it's your first time teaching or they may take you on a merry go round of lies which isn't fun.

If it's your only option I can't say it was a totally bad experience but know what you getting yourself into first.

Happy travels.

Re: Shenyang Red River Center / Institute of Engineering

WELCOME TO CHINA! No matter how desperate schools are for foreign teachers, they always make the foreigner provide their credentials first -- implying some sort of "standard," but soon it is discovered (often too late) that the school/management has no professional standard or integrity on their side of the equation.

As a rule the above is true. One wonders why they place so much emphasis on viewing applicants' credentials first.Maybe to let the applicants know indirecly that they are merely employment seekers in need of jobs,in stark contrast to their potential employers.Establishing this kind of differential relationship at first may, they hope, prevent jobseekers they wish to employ from negotiating at a later stage.
On another note,a Chinese recruiting agent once told me that many schools and FE establishments here on the mainland are initially far too picky when it comes to selecting their new FT's for each upandcoming semester, and quickly reject many applications at that time. But those who still haven't filled their vacancies for one reason or another within a week or two of the students' impending arrival change their tune dramatically - they will gladly take applicants whom they were not at all interested in originally when they're in a fix.I was told that this often happens with the most prestigious employers, whose Chinese teachers of English, especially the deans and vice-deans are too haughty and fussy.
Seemingly this situation is often caused by louwai who had earlier applied for jobs to various schools, colleges and universities, break their promises to those that they regarded as having offered inferior employment packages in order to accept the best offers. Not exactly cricket, but I cannot feel sorry for most employers hard done by in said way, given their initial reluctance to sign contracts with their preferred applicants timeously.

No matter how desperate schools are for foreign teachers, they always make the foreigner provide their credentials first -- implying some sort of "standard," but soon it is discovered (often too late) that the school/management has no professional standard or integrity on their side of the equation. These types of operations usually offer no professional support (stable internet access, proper teaching materials, etc.)

Negotiation is EVERYTHING in China. Nothing is offered without tenacious negotiation (to foreigners or Chinese).

Yes, 4000RMB is low, but there's no way they'll offer more until they believe someone is worth it. Most Chinese schools or businesses I worked with during my five years there, had no website -- or if they did, it was poorly maintained.

Ultimately, it's the secrecy that's the turn-off, and will likely continue for the duration of your "relationship" with them. I agree with the other poster: move on.

If I were you,I'd have no further dealings with said employer unless I had no job offers elsewhere. He seems to be far too cautious and secretive to be trusted.

Shenyang Red River Center / Institute of Engineering

Having submitted an ESLTB post that I wanted to work in Shenyang from September, Red River contacted me.
They directed me to their website - which said the pay was 4,000rmb pm which I think is unusually low.
They had also mentioned the website was out of date.

I emailed them asking for updated information regarding terms of employment.
they refused, saying I had to submit my details first.

Do you think this is strange? I do.
Why are they being secretive about their employment package?
Do you know?
I have not sent my details as I am wondering about this organization.
It seems a strange way to attract new staff.

What do you think?
