Re: Hall of Shame - BRAVO!

I think that you should refrain from attending social functions where you know you will be pressurized to drink alcohol. Either do that or attend and be disrespected for insisting on not drinking alcohol. In fact, there's no satisfactory solution for you in such a situation.

Re: Hall of Shame - BRAVO!

Respect
can work both ways. You see, I respect all my students, as well as the Chinese teachers and staff, but when it comes to gathering for special occassions such as last week's Christmas party, both Chinese teachers and School admin. staff were persistent that we English, Japanese, and French teachers drank their so-call "wine" toast with them. Now if you have been in China for sometime, you'll discover that Chinese do drink, and each person at a table (offten times 10 or more at a table) goes aroung and you have to drink with them. Now, I don't drink. I did it once, one drink with the boss, it got me sick. So, when I don't drink, they say I am being disrespectful, to them and their culture. Now, you tell me, how do I respond to that!

Re: Hall of Shame - BRAVO!

I disagree gingermeggs, a teacher has to automatically be given respect.

Certainly, but that teacher can lose all that respect in 5 minutes. You have to keep working at it.
Turn up for class stinking of booze, smoking in the building, complaining incessantly about early morning classes, and insulting your T/As can instantly erode all that respect. Chinese Teachers and students do talk to each other, you know.

Re: Hall of Shame - BRAVO!

I'd say initially a teacher should be respected by his charges. What happens thereafter will depend on whether the teacher can maintain that respect, according to what happens in and outside the classroom.I say outside as well as in the classroom because a teacher who is accidentally observed by a student of his (or hers) behaving in a manner unbefitting of the profession while among the general public will lose respect. For example, behaving in a drunken manner at a restaurant in the company of a lady of the night would be a bad thing.Respect needn't be earned by teachers, but unfortunately it is lost by some of them for one reason or another.

Re: Hall of Shame - BRAVO!

I disagree gingermeggs, a teacher has to automatically be given respect. If I as a student disrespect a teacher because they have yet to earn my respect, wel, that's just circular, and retarded logic. Usually people who say such things are arrogant and feel they need respect no one, because they are better then most everyone else, as you seem. No, your logic is flawed. Respect us because we are a teacher, the Chinese teachers get it, so should we.

Re: Hall of Shame - BRAVO!

As a self-professed inhabitant of the Australian outback, your words clearly show that you do not know what's going on in the society in China.Furthermore, attacking Silverboy personally does not prove anything about training centres. But it does prove your manners belong where you come from!
Bony was a fictional detective in Australia who brought cunning criminals to justice with the help of a wise old aborigine. But I don't think you have the inclination nor the intelligence to bring even one of the many dishonest training centres operating in China to a halt by legal means.

Re: Hall of Shame - BRAVO!

BRAVO, Gingermeggs! Well posted!
Silverboy is someone who has looked for, and then found the way to live the easiest of lives. He cares nothing about being respected by his employer and/or by his students. His job satisfaction will always be negligible, but that's nothing to him. His 'extracurricular activities' more than compensate for that loss! Dancing, as he has stated already, is as important to him as breathing, ha ha!
In fact,he's not a real teacher, he's a 'good time Charlie' who's been wily enough to identify the best way to deceive his employers while maximising his own personal enjoyment. Teaching at public colleges and universities in China, but not elsewhere, is his vehicle to do so.
But at training centers here, he will be found out quickly and summarily dismissed! So, he castigates them all! It's a great pity for his students he can ply his dishonest trade here at second and third tier public colleges and universities year upon year.

Re: Hall of Shame - BRAVO!

Teachers at training centres are poorly skilled and trained, precisely because DOS and TA's work at them. On top of that, owners of training centres only care about profits, not education.

Sweeping generalization! Not worth tuppence.
2) Allows your teachers to have the total creative freedom to design lesson plans as they see fit without some pest DOS or TA constantly interfering and causing problems. BAN TA FROM ALL CLASSES.

Total creative freedom is not necessarily a good thing. Guidelines are more useful. T/A's can come in handy at times.
Ban "games" from all classes except kindergarten classes.

Why? Creative teachers teach well with games.
but during the week no class should start until 10am. In addition to having Chinese wives and girlfriends, some of us like to go to discos till at least 2am ( myself especially, dancing is like breathing for me )

Yes, sound educational practise, that is found in good schools all over the World. Great reasoning, as well.
FT's must be treated with the utmost respect. It is why TA must be banned from all classrooms, they do not have respect for foreigners.

Respect must be earned. It is not a given. Those that DEMAND respect, usually get very little.

Training centres are an added item to normal Chinese education. They exist only because there is a demand. They exist to make money for the owner. They are a business. Some are run well, others badly. Yer takes yer pick, and yer makes yer choices.

Silverboy is totally prone to sweeping generalizations, and his posts can usually be taken with a small pinch of salt.
