Re: In praise of Raoul Duke

I hadn't realised that 'a greasy spoon' is an idiom, but I knew that it was not a compliment as the literal meaning is kind of yucky.

Hi Turino!!

A "Greasy Spoon" is a local hangout in many smaller communities (usually a Cafe) where you go to get the latest gossip, whilst downing greasy burgers, greasy french fries and gallons of coffee (often stirred with a greasy spoon).

Dave's "fits the bill" in many ways; not least of which is that his Cafe acts as a clearing house for gossip, news and views in this small (ESL) community.

On Raul's Saloon,I've seen Dave's ESL Cafe referred to as 'the greasy spoon' by one of the regular posters.I wonder why it's called that! Can anyone out there enlighten us?
