Re: Many Opportunities for Black Teachers - ESL school review

Just wanted to jump in on this topic, being an African American English teacher in China...

I have to say that it IS rough to find a job because of race for the most part. I guess I got lucky finding a job here because Im light skinned with "good hair" AND I have a chinese fiancee who knows a lot of headmasters in the city Im in.

The school Im in isnt a chain school but it falls into that category for the most part. I teach kids classes on the weekends and race isnt an issue but I mainly teach at the local high schools and actually, when it comes to race, it seems that the students are actually HAPPY to be taught by a black teacher..either that or theyre just being nice..lol Personally, when I finish the day's English lesson, theres usually about 10-15 minutes left in class and then they asked me to teach things that they really don't get here like about the American civil rights movement in detail, History of Slavery, the Civil War etc. They all seem really into that sort of thing and saying that about a public school classroom of almost 100 teenagers lecturing about ANY topic is an achievement. lol

In fact, recently, my headmaster wanted to know if I had more african american friends who wanted to come teach in China because the local public school specifically asked for more because they wanted to expose their students to different kinds of races and ethnicities.

So while its difficult, its not impossible to get a job at a halfway decent school in China if youre black....that being said, though, dont be surprised if you dont get invited to like business dinners, promo events, etc..but I dont like that sort of thing anyway and like I said, being light skinned with good hair and the only american at the place (mostly canadians at the school), I get invited to those things anyway.

That is good advice Turnoi, as you know the TC's only want white monkeys to take part in one of those muppet shows you have talked about before.

A decent university in China will happily employ a black teacher if they have the right qualifications and experience.

Schools like Shane, EF and Aston think that anyone with a white face who plays stupid games with spoilt rich and arrogant Chinese students and makes them laugh is a good teacher.

Training centres don't like blacks, they could be the best teacher in the world, but they don't have blond hair and blue eyes and they are not considered to be be native speakers by ignorant Chinese people ( just like Filipino FT's )

If you have blonde hair, blue eyes, and you like to play stupid little "games" with the students and you can't teach, then head toward the crap chain schools in China, they will welcome you with open arms!
