I was just offered a similar contract at the Hampson in Guangzhou today. It must be their standard contract in China. I tried to explain that withholding wages, especially on a PT contract where no accommodation or visa support is provided, is not acceptable but they would not budge. I told them that there are too many other companies who are willing to do business like civilized human beings and walked out. I would urge everybody else to do the same thing. It is also an illegal contract. Report it to the Bureau of Foreign Affairs and any other proper authorities. I am doing the same. It may seem they won't do much about it, but if enough of us "foreigners" bring it to their attention they will have to. We Western teachers need to stand up to the bullying and extortion and do some bullying of our own. If we all refuse to accept any unreasonable offers they have no choice but to provide more reasonable conditions. They certainly aren't likely to do it because they develop a fiber of human decency and wake up one morning and decide they want to stop being unscrupulous barbarians. Of course their centers look beautiful. They are stealing the pay that is rightfully yours to see that they are. Their domiciles are probably equally lavish. Are yours?
