Crummy living conditions are just part of the story.

I taught in Yangzhou at another college from 2006-2009 and knew some of the western teachers who taught there through the years. A complaint that I heard from nearly all that I knew was that one of the other western teachers spent a lot of time with the FAO talking about the other western teachers. Many personal plans were preempted by the FAO at the last minute with sudden demands on their time.

The FAO often overstepped her bounds by requiring English Corners to be held on Saturday mornings--- some teachers did so without pay. Teachers who were assigned less than the maximum number of contractual class hours were required to "make up" those hours by doing work for the FAO as well as the foreign languages department. This came from the FAO, not the foreign languages department.

Complaints about the cafeteria staff (getting a meal card, trying to pay for lunch, being overcharged for lunch and dinner, denial of service, harassment from cafeteria workers) were common.

The IT department was not helpful at all. The computers were often inoperative. Email was tampered with. Passwords to log onto the internet were inexplicably changed. Teachers had to contact the FAO to get new pass words.

The language labs worked fine for the Chinese teachers. When western teachers tried to use the same labs, they didn't work.

There was no TV in the room. Cooking appliances that were specified in contracts were non-existent.

Some of these things I witnessed first-hand. Other complaints were common enough to be believed.

There is nothing about this school to recommend. Maybe if you are dying to teach in China and you got your degree from a cereal box, maybe this place will give you the start you need.
