Aren't you from Mexico? Or Texas?

No, wrong on both counts. And I seriously resent the implication that I might be from Texas. ;-{)

I'm nearing the end of my second teaching gig, in Shandong, and will be glad to return to Shanxi, where my first gig took place.
Shanxi people are good people, unlike the arrogant citizens of Qingdao. By and large, they are inhospitable to foreigners. The only good things about that city are the beach and the beer. I can hardly wait to return to Yuncheng, where the real China and its real people can be found!

Just wanted to say that I have been to Taiyuan and have lived and taught in Shanxi for a number of years. I agree, the pollution is rampant and the things could be a lot better... HOWEVER, there is an unseen sort of beauty that lies within the people in this province. This is because a lot of people are quite poor (besides the coal bosses) and a lot of them are quite kind and very interested in foreigners. If you are looking for the REAL China, perhaps the way it ways 20-30 years back, you will find it around this region. It all depends on what you are looking for, and most foreigners don't have the mental or physical ability to live in Shanxi.

Of the people who have made comments on this thread, how many people have ever been to Shanxi, etc. I have stated that I have not been there. I wonder about this question, with many threads I have read. Just a polite question.

But Shanxi province is a haven for Western retirees - they can get Z vias there, or be allowed to work without them via certain agents without fear of being punished for breaking China's visa regs as set by Beijing.
Backward places can be good for aged foreigners with considerably fewer job options in the PRC than young laowai. And Taiyuan is not representative of the whole of the province. By the way, Shanxi women are among the most beautiful in China. There are many Shanxi princesses there. I'll never regret having taught in Shanxi.

Agreed. Shanxi is probably my least favorite area of China. Personally, I believe that if they were going to give China an enema, they would stick the nozzle in Taiyuan.

This is a very polluted part of China. I am glad I researched this matter and have decided to stay away, from Shanxi province. I found a better place in China. A job agent tried to get me to come to Shanxi. That job agency does not care. They are more than 1,000 miles a way. If you want to keep your health, you will not come to Shanxi Province. Just check the Internet. Check the Internet about Shanxi and air pollution.
