San Mig - China has a 5000 year history / or you can call it 5000 years old. After such a long time frame, it's at its best :)

Thanks for the post.

On this issue, I feel China is light years behind certain GCC countries with regard their laws governning employment of foreigners, visa regulations, and attracting and keeping foreigners employed and happy in China.

The gulf country I worked in, 2 year residence permit obtained in 1 day, with optional driving licence on the reverse side.

Why can't china make it as easy for it's expats?

Oh, and a bank card that actually works in the west, with Visa Electron as opposed to unionpay.

Things need to change from within, or will they?

The D visa isn't automatic for foreigners with Chinese spouses who have been in China for 5 years. You have to prove earnings and good character!
As for a 1 year L coz of Chinese wife, that's not cast in stone. But you'd get a half-year L, at least. Depends on the attitude of your wife's/husband's hometown PSB. I could've got a 1 year L by taking a medical. Bloody stupid. I refused that, why should I be forced to exit if, say, I became terminally ill? The visa regulations are a mess and nonsensical.
On a similar note, a Canadian who has taught legally in Yuncheng for 5 years tried to get a long residence permit as he has served the community well. There seems to be a provision for that in the law. But, basically he was brushed aside.

Resident Visa (D) Issued to aliens who are going to reside permanently in China.

My understanding is you have to be married to a Chinese national for 5 years to obtain that, but it forbids you to do business or work.

As an aside, a brit guy I know in guangdong who married a local gal, told me he is able to get a 1 year L visa because of his marital status.

Thanks for the info you posted!!!
