I agree 100% ! If schools can make ill reports about teacher's for some absurd reason why can't be black list crap schools ? Just as long as everyone

Re: Demo lessons

Crappy demo lesson experiences are not just a Chinese phenomenon. I was asked to perform a History demo lesson once at Southend-on-Sea, England for a college of further education back in the late 90s. There were a whole bunch of other hopefuls too; some just like me who had just graduated from teacher training college. I gave my demo lesson, which went rather well as you would expect from a newly qualified teacher. In fact, because I had to return to that college some time later, one of the panelists, an Administrative Assistant (no students), told me that she was so excited about my lesson that she went home and started to go through her history books again. It turned out that a young, somewhat immature girl, who was not trained in History, who already had a job at the college, had been tipped-the-wink that the job was hers. The interviews were just for appearance sake.

If that wasn’t’ enough, I still attended another demo interview at the same college (glutton for punishment), and the guy who was supposed to observe didn’t even lift his head to look at me and was dismissive when I handed him the handout I had prepared. He was writing something, but I’m guessing it had nothing to do with what I was doing. I didn’t get that job either and since have become rather skeptical of demo lessons.

Re: Wuhan Polytechnic University - better don't unpack!

I'm guessing that that university has professors who are accent snobs. They feel qualified to judge English speakers' accents while at the same time having lousy English accents themselves.

I never said that his English skills were not up to par, nor did I assume that to be the case. Given that that 'university' had already signed a contract with him, I naturally assumed that the dean was satisfied with the applicant's paper qualifications and language background. Anyway, since I had posted, the OP has said the reason for the breach of contract by the 'university' was a big difference in the teaching methodology displayed by the OP during his 'critique' from what the 'university' was expecting. I think this is a pretext. Typical Chinese trickery, unique to Asian culture. As for demos, they can stick them up their ***es, as far as I'm concerned! Wuhan Poly deserves to be shunned by all Westerners!

Re: Wuhan Polytechnic University - better don't unpack!

That means they have got to prepare and pass certain language tests qualifying them for enrollment in a foreign uni abroad.

And that means the university should pay you at least 6,000 RMB/month for 18 classes/week. But being kinda lazy, I would reject such a post - I prefer teaching oral English for at most 18 classes/week. Teaching standard everyday English mixed with a bit of humour, for at least 4,500 RMB/month, suits me just fine. No stress and no marking! Plenty of free time, too.

Re: Wuhan Polytechnic University - better don't unpack!

They had signed a contract with you. Between that time and the time you arrived, they decided to employ a late applicant for that job instead of you. Presumably either because he'll work for a lesser salary than you'd have been paid, or in their eyes he'll do a better job than you, or indeed both reasons. Most definitely not the way Western employers hire jobseekers! But that's the way many Chinese employers in EFL opreate!

Re: Wuhan Polytechnic University - better don't unpack!

that is why i refuse demo class ! EG here is my cv if you think I am qualified offer me a job if not, don't bug me -- and I don't think it's a breach as in China inorder to "work" at a school you must have your experts certificate ? Do you have yours from Wuhan Poly tech ??

Re: Wuhan Polytechnic University - better don't unpack!

Lurker - you just assume his English skills were not upto par.. Therefore your assuming once again, you know him personally ? And no ! How can a person ( as he had said ) the dean of whomever it was, judge a person if THEY CAN'T SPEAK THE LANGUAGE ! As for me, it should never apply to Wuhan Poly tech.. I think it's a level 3 college RE the wording of POLYTECHNIC <--- not a university it's a college

Re: Wuhan Polytechnic University - better don't unpack!

They are actually preparing students with majors in chemistry, agricultural engeneering etc. for further studies abroad. That means they have got to prepare and pass certain language tests qualifying them for enrollment in a foreign uni abroad.

The Chinese teachers of that European language concerned do not only have a very basic mastery of the language they are teaching, they also have immense problems in their teaching methodology. I have simply demonstrated how it could perhaps be done, and they did not seem to like it because it would clearly show their own failures. It is useless to discuss that point any further with them...

Re: Wuhan Polytechnic University - better don't unpack!

Your username implies you're a mainland European, maybe a German. I think your prospective employer has done you a big favor by checking your teaching out before unleashing you on the students, who will be on summer vacation at this time, in any case. It's better for you to part company with your university now than be forced out four or six weeks into the new semester, at which time it'd be damned difficult for you to get a new position.
I'm guessing that that university has professors who are accent snobs. They feel qualified to judge English speakers' accents while at the same time having lousy English accents themselves. It's not good that they have enticed you there from afar only to reject you. And that's after you've gotten a signed contract from them, and have not even been given a chance to teach their students! That's how badly we foreigners can be treated by a prospective employer in China. In a word, many Chinese employers cannot be trusted. Another university that operates in this shabby way is Linyi University of Shandong province. I think Wuhan Polytechnic University and Linyi University have much in common and should both be placed on a black list!

Wuhan Polytechnic University - better don't unpack!

This school is perhaps not one of the best in China but seemed to be a decent one. They made me coming all the way to their place, asked me to give a demo lesson and then told me they don't want me.

The funny thing is that both of us had signed a legally valid contract before, and now it looks like a breach of the contract on their part. I had three teachers and the Vice Dean watching the demo lesson - there were no students, the Vice Dean did not understand the language I was using, and the three Chinese teachers had no idea about the current standards in language teaching methodology.

Do such things happen in China on a regular basis that totally incompetent Chinese people are "evaluating" your teaching performance? What a joke!!!....I am happy to leave them; I will do much better elsewhere!
