Re Mianyang Foreign Language School

This is still a school to avoid.
Same problems with pay and conditions.
"bottom of the barrel"

I worked at the school. I received no salary and travel reimbursement.

Re: Mianyang Foreign Language School

I just meant the teachers who might get an L in hong kong first, but I agree not many would do that, some do however.

Good night,

Re: Mianyang Foreign Language School

Thank you for your informative and interesting reply. It seems that we essentially agree, although most teachers do not stop off at Hong Kong, to have the opportunity of buying a mobile-but i suppose you mean if you do border runs to acquire Z visas? Meself I prefer to work on F and L visas, which is just as well because I lost the degree I had a few years ago, so I don't think they would allow me a Z.

Just one small point, QQ only do a Windows version, surely?

Re: Mianyang Foreign Language School

Will dissect your response, if I may?

. I assume as you are using Stirling you mean buy one in UK and take it to China.

Yes if buying in the UK.

I'm afraid there is a big flaw in that suggestion because your mobile would not support Chinese and you will need Chinese for helpful Chinese people to send to your mobile so as you can inform the taxi driver where to go to and where to return.

I bought my cheapo dual sim phone in Hong Kong with simplified and traditional chinese and english and pinyin support, therefore, no problem, that is why I won't sell it for any price, even though said phone is also available in the UK/EU. But you are right, better to get a cheaper one on arrival, ideally in HK as you will have a returns policy and warranty that is worth the paper it is written on, although for a 10-20 quid phone what do you expect. There are even disposable pre paid phones now, believe it or not.

Apart from that type of mobile use I would suggest to any newbie FT that he keeps his mobile firmly turned off, so when it suddenly dawns on fao that he should have an impromptu English Corner tonight and decides you are just the man for the job, alas he cannot contact you.

A good idea for sure.

Apart from all that the Chinese like to spy on you and listen to your mobile telephone communications.

I wonder how easy this is to do. I saw some cheap gadgets on sale in Shenzhen that claimed to do it effectively, but they looked just like toys. for the secret services I reckon it is possible of course, but then most ft's who only earn in 10 years in China, what an arab businessman spends on a container full of exports aren't exactly the top of the spying list for economic gain...or are they?

[]oxy it seems prefers to use his computer but that can bring you trouble spies spies spies. Never use the Chinese fake Windows because no updates festers lots of Chinese spies.

True, one reason I did not like chinese windows versions, qq, et al.

I would suggest not having any operating system on your hard-drive at all.

Easiest way, but a ballache, but still safest.

Yes SanMig you can buy a 20 quid mobile, even a 10 quid one from Tesco. I assume as you are using Stirling you mean buy one in UK and take it to China. Never use the Chinese fake Windows because no updates festers lots of Chinese spies. I would suggest not having any operating system on your hard-drive at all. If you really want to be safe put your operating system, Puppy Linux on a pendrive. If you use Puppy you can save any changes you make to the pendrive in the same way you save stuff to hard-drive. You can wear your operating system on a chain around your neck, so your communications will be secure. To summarise, Don't use your computer with any distro installed and always turn off your mobile, but try to manage without a mobile by getting Chinese people to write you notes that you can show.

Re: Mianyang Foreign Language School

Difference of opinion. Let's see if when it comes to it, and he needs one, what he would do?

Stranded at an airport, and need to cobble together change to use a payphone in a different language or script?

No, a cellphone, and not a fancy smartphone that can be bought for 10-20 quid can be a lifesaver. End of story,

Re: Mianyang Foreign Language School

Mobile phones are more likely to lose you your life than save it. People are always being flattened by buses, falling down cellars and stuff because they are paying too much attention to their mobiles ,either texting or talking. []oxy sounds a shrewd man to me for not having one.

Re: Mianyang Foreign Language School

I do not have a cellphone

A cheap, simple calls only one may save your life. At least you could reach your wife, and call police for help etc. Use a computer for everything else.

Kind regards and merry christmas,

Re: Mianyang Foreign Language School

Some years ago, I was offered a job there through Frank Zhang. The school director pleaded with me to go there after taking the trouble to phone my wife's tel no - I do not have a cellphone. His English was very good and he sounded a reasonable guy, but I turned the job offer down as I'm not interested in teaching primary school classes. Besides, my schedule would have been on the heavy side for me - 22 classes/week, I usually go for 16/week @ colleges/universities/senior middle schools. The salary offered at that time was high - 7,000 RMB a month, very good fot Sichuan outside of Chengdu and Chongqing, and the school was happy to employ me for one academic year on two 180-day L visas. That's all I can tell you about that private school.
