In a word, I feel like workingfor myself as a happy teacher.
Chinglish #2 - 'in a word' + many many many words.
In a word, adorable.
Well, you are right, but I would have done this-
In a word, I feel like working
for myself as a happy teacher.
But strictly speaking you are right cos he didn't.
That's the kind of Chinglish that can give a man either a stiffy or boredom. Depends how many words long the 'word' is. Some women can natter on like that for ever.
A long term well known crap school in China. Avoid.
In a word, I feel like working
for myself as a happy teacher.
Chinglish #2 - 'in a word' + many many many words.
In a word, adorable.
WOW!!! A real good wumao post!!!
I like Newwindows. If possible i think i will work here as long as I can.
People there are so nice and we travel a lot during the school time. By the way, students there are really eager to learn, They are working hard. In a word, I feel like working for myself as a happy teacher.
Haha, of course you are. What are you teaching, Chinglish, lol
Hi, i dont know why you say things like this, because i am a new teacher in this school and nothing like what you said. they give me a very apartment and rent free, also the school will give me bonus if i can bring new students here. I think the school treated me very well here. plz stop this silly rumors.
Define "high salary", since Chinese are quick to call 9000/month a "high salary", while by Western standards it would be more around 25000-30000/month.
Ha ha ha ha ha
After reading this, NOBODY will ever apply at your school... ha ha ha ha
You know what? You think it's a horrible place, because you didn't obey the rules of them, you didn't do ur job, thus you got some punishments. I had part-time job in New windows, that was a good experience. Everyone is nice, we did some activities with teachers and students. And managers always are nice to foreign teachers, I know once, a manger changed light balls in apartment for a teacher, and brought bottles of water to them, it was almost in midnight. And someone just told me that you and ur foreign friends did some slanders here. So i have to say somethings. Your purpose of came to here was work, rather than trip, so you need to teach the classes, go to the meeting and, participate in activities, that's the rule. If you want to complain something.
You should insure everything that you did are perfect, or just stfu. Otherwise, you should know what you need to do, before you came here, and you accepted it, but you still complain here, which because you're fuking lazy. maybe not you, but that must be some of you.
For others, if you are not a lazy dog, you will have a good experience in NEW WINDOWS
your behavior isn't in accordance with your slander.
Chinglish double negatives are so precious. I strive to live my life so that my behavior is in accordance with my slander.
Sweet.
The teachers in New Windows School usually get a high salary because of hard work. The environment of free accomodation is convenient. The school meets all requirements teachers need. You'd better think about your words.
To Maryna Haters and the Mean Former Newwindows School Colleagues:
I'm totally shocked by the slander of all of you. I'm a new teacher here. I know you Sawyer because the teachers here showed me your wechat message. You told them you wanted to come back and brought your whole family back. You forgot? They didn't meet your needs because your condition didn't meet the requirement of working visa. I like Baoding and Newwindows School. The environment and colleagues are good. I will go on teaching here. Sawyer, your behavior isn't in accordance with your slander. You don't deserve to be a teacher. Maryna said she had lawyer friend in America and she would bring a formal charge. Be careful.
OMG!
Dear Newwindows and Maryna Haters,
I guess I`m a new member in that club now.I was lured to this miserable job by a country man who lied through his teeth about how good that place was.Unfortunately, I was not as lucky as you were since I had to find out The hard way how horrible and Unprofessional that place is.I had so many problems and unfortunate incidents ever since the day I got there.Salary, Work Environment, bullying, unprofessional practices, disrespect, blackmailing, daylight robbery.... you name it.I had to stand and fight for myself countless times and thus I was the least favorite teacher there and especially for Marina`s. I imagine if I wasn`t a good teacher, I would have been sent away, but even when you are a good teacher and taking care of your class, despite the lack of the teaching materials and the outdated books they are using, they would not admit it.I fought with the owner of the school once, they like to call her big boss, and I literally told her to stop using teachers that way and stop hiring teachers from Morocco because most people I know are like me and won`t stand to her nonsense. Apparently, she took my words to her heart and decided to leave me alone and not discuss with me anything because she knows that I would shout back, but that did not stop her from sending her dogs barking sometimes.
After six months of enduring such a horrible place, I was transferred to another branch in GaoBeidian, which is franchised to another person and He himself was cheated by her and got himself a 5 years of exploitation.I had some peace in there and the work environment was better but still I had to boycott Baoding management and their meeting and they in turn did the same.
Now, I am a few days away of leaving this hell for good and I do not wish to anyone. If anyone hears or receives any offers from NEWWINDOWS, just run away or tell them no fuck you very much because it will undoubtedly the most unpleasant experience in your life.
Hi,
I applied for a position at New Windows English Academy, and received a work permit and an invitation. However, on the way to the Chinese consulate I had a car accident, so I was unable to apply for the visa. Because of the period required for healing, I would not be able to travel to and live in China until after at least three months. The school was so upset about this that they wrote that they will report this to the Chinese authorities, in order that I be placed on the not-to-be-granted-visa list, so I could forever forget about working in China.
Is this 'threat' realistic, or just bluff?
you posted back in 2011, here we are in 2015, it is amazing how these f***ing animals are able to find unaware "teachers" to keep their business afloat, I personally know of a few of them working for that bitch, they all have something negative to say, some are even hold hostage by their visa problems, which she uses as leverage to profit from them, so far it seems that corruption is the key to make big bucks in Baoding. I know someone locally, she is in charge of foreign affairs for another school, she was told that if "any" other business around her school interferes with their business, they (immigration & Police) can shut it down, all she need to do is call, so far she has not fall that low, but this comes to show us how rooted corruption is in Baoding, and it also shows how stupid many foreigners are, after reading reviews like this one, they still take their chances, the problem here is, they are setting the standards and feeding that school's greed for future crimes, there will no change until the word reaches anyone who is considering working for them.
A little insight on the owner of New Windows School in BaoDing. She goes by the English name of Maryna. She is married but apparently by convenience. If you will notice all of her "business" partners or mangers are men. The scam is she gets "romantically" involved with them and brings them into the business. If they "hurt" her or break up with her she roots them out of the business, often times taking money. This is a power trip, ego and self gratification at others expense. USE EXTREEM CAUTION IF YOU ARE MALE AND WANT TO WORK HERE.
I went to the apartment which they provided. Actually then is another long story but It's more interesting.
Can't wait for your next piece! I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. Your first piece was a good read, and I believe every word of it. Thanks for posting that.
Dear
I have been invited to work in New Windows English Academy in Baoding in 2012 on September. I am experienced teacher in teaching kids. From the first day of my work there I felt no respect to the teachers at all. Except that they have one hour class without break for kids. Can you imagine 60 minutes teaching with no off time? After 30 minutes usually children can not continue to study because their brain is tired. What ever you do then they hardly listen you. Each class of mine the last 20 minutes I was not teaching. The parents usually watching from camera or they come next to door, especially when they standing next to door and watching you from windows it gives you a little discomfort in teaching. So eventually parents looks like complained about me to the boss of school as I call her. Next day the boss called me to her room and was shouting to me with angry voice, then I told her If you think I am not right teacher I will leave. An what she says to me it is unbelievable, she says that I need to teach the class whatever is that, making me feeling as if I am a slave here. Well I decided to teach my that days classes. Later about 20 minutes another boss came as I understood she is controling all the schools in Baoding which belongs to her. They were watching my class about 50 minutes. Actually I think I taught that class quite well. Well, listen what she says after the class. she:-You can't teach well!
me:-Well If you think I am not good teacher I will leave your school.
she:- what?? You have to teach the classes do you understand? We invited you here, you stay and teach the classes.
With very angry and loud and annoying voice. Well I am not the person who feels scaring. Well it annoyed so much I said
me:- Fuck you then!
she:- Fuck you
I went to the apartment which they provided. Actually then is another long story but It's more interesting.
She puts all the children in one class and forces the teachers to teach using books which they copied. I heard the story about Meilin firing her American business partner; she can be a volatile, temperamental, nasty woman
One reason to avoid that fake place
A real place that puts emphasis on education would allow teachers to use their own materials, and not pirated material. Firing american business partner...why that's the chinese way, copy off your ideas, and then get rid of you when they are making enough money and no longer need you! See, she is firing the foreigner because she FEELS she CAN...
All teachers should vote with their feet, and hit her where it hurts her, in her pocket!!!
I second this. I studied in Hebei university for a semester and worked here while studying. The 'manager' Meilin Zhang is terrible. She puts all the children in one class and forces the teachers to teach using books which they copied. I heard the story about Meilin firing her American business partner; she can be a volatile, temperamental, nasty woman. It really does seem unfair that her friends/coworkers drive expensive cars, while the students can barely afford their textbooks. I knew two american girls who were working there. They were lovely, but after 10 weeks of that school, they had to leave as the school had made them so unhappy. Meilin Zhang doesn't speak English at all, and uses foreigners without shame, to make herself richer.
A school to be avoided at all costs.
My Dear Friend, I am sorry to hear of these things as well. I haven't written of my experience to anyone, but thought this might be the venue for it. I too was in Hebei , but in Baoding at the New Windows School. Obviously I'm writing to tell people not to go there. The owner took her partner for about $250,000US for the renovation of the school and fired him, if that's possible. All the teachers that he had used, she fired and didn't pay the administrative help as well. Her husband is a policeman and as the police are corrupt, so goes the school. I later did my research and found that many of the private English schools are for profit, not there to teach English. This was one such school. The owner kept putting new students in the one class and expected me to teach to a dozen students, all at different levels. Their end complaint was that I was not a good teacher and would have to be certified by the Chinese translators there, who couldn't speak English either. As the owner of the school she is not allowed to hold a government position but teaches law at the university. She has no degree or certification to teach law and can barely speak English herself. Obviously the corruption carries over into the University system as well. There are other infractions that were perpetrated but these upstanding citizens of China but not enough room to continue to enumerate them all.
Hi man,
I am an African like you.Believe me,your english grammar is lagging, your spellings of some words are ridiculous. What kind of english do you think you will teach Canadians? You are very fortunate to have a Foreign expert certificate.Teach yourself first. You are running a big risk of misleading people who are supposed to be future citizens.Stop your mean boasting and educate yourself.
OMG, this is by far the least thought post I've read. Yeah right, how dare they use your son's name... maybe the computer company should sue you and your son for using its name too. I will contact their lawyers to make sure you two go to jail, this in unacceptable...
I think you get the idea
I don't know who this guy is but the Dell English school operates out of Songyuan and has only been open for about 9 months. If someone else has used my son's name to open a school, then they are liable and I will inform the local authorities as such. At the time of this post, Dell was only a teacher. Ivan, I doubt that you ever worked for my son but maybe Bill who is notorios for being an A%$hole!!!
Joe,
Even if you get it in writing that does not mean the school will follow the contract. In China, most contracts are meaningless. My friend won a case at the FAO of our city but there was no enforcement on the ruling. Another thing, it took a year and a half for the case to be heard. All that time and effort for nothing. Welcome to China teachers...
By the way Joe, you are wrong about that issue with Ivan. There was a case like that in my city not to long ago and the foreign teacher was attacked (i.e. assaulted) by some students. He was on the ground with forearms up covering his face. Some of the students and other teachers had to come and pull the students off the teacher. That is not a FIGHT THAT IS ASSAULT and there is a difference Joe. Two different words two different meanings, You are`WRONG JOE!!! The websters definition is on Ivan's post and you should read it...Jane was assaulted.

Ivan
Perhaps you should spend less time Yerk-in-off and more time reading books before you make disparaging remarks about my qualities as a teacher. My use of the word fight to describe the incident Jane described was perfectlly acceptable.
Jane stated that:
"I had a student try to assault me in class and naturally I raised my hand to protect myself. The student then claimed I tried to choke him, which is false."
If you look up the definition of the word fight in a dictionary you'll find something like this...
"Fight - to engage in battle or in single combat; attempt to defend oneself against or to subdue, defeat, or destroy an adversary."
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fight
Joe,
Maybe your grasp of the English language isn't so good. If you read Jane's post, she stated that she was assaulted. That is not a fight if one person raises their arm in self defence. I hope you only teach conversational/oral English...

. . . . . are both rather poor, all be it he is deemed . . . . .
For the near-perfect Canadians; all be it.
For us far-from-perfect Aussies; albeit.
Hello to all,
First of all i want to thank all those reading these posts. To reply to what the other guy just wrote, first i want to tell him that i did not say i have the best pronunciation, spelling or grammatic skills in the world. So please spare me the case of "Who is the best EFL teacher in China". And to proceed i want to make it clear that i did not in anyway take the deffence of the school in question and if you think i did, then you are putting in question your own reading and understanding abilities that you proudly claim to have.
My point if i may state it again for you in simple terms is that, at the end of her post she made a very unpleasant remark about Africans teaching in China that i don't deem necesary and i think she did that just because her job was probably given to an African.
Now to come to the point where you openly express your lack of understanding stating that i had a lot of spelling and grammatic mistakes in my post, and that however i am deem fit to teach in China, all i can say to you is that everybody have the right to express his or her opinion. And that i put in the account of your opinion. But the fact still remains that i am a foreign expert confirm by SAFEA just like yourself and there is nothing you can do about that. And also i want you to know that i could teach Enlish in any part of the world including Canada if i want to. Because i have the qualifications necesary for that and if it is imposible in anyway it will only be because of other reasons and not because of my incompetence.
Hope you get it right this time
Many foreign teachers of English are teaching nothing but oral English here in China. Naturally, the accent and fluency of a foreign teacher, as well as his grammar are important considerations for his (or her) potential employer.
In my experience, top of the class for standard pronunciation are Canadians. Generally, they speak very clearly. As for their grammar, it is the best. You know, the Canadian education system equips them very well in that respect. I'm not just saying that because I am a Canadian who has been appointed as a Director of Studies by my Chinese employer. I should add that I think East Coast Americans and Alaskans also have good pronuciation, as do the English. All of them speak fluent English that is grammatically correct, too. That is why all those native speakers I have listed above are in great demand here, and tend to earn higher salaries than foreign teachers from elsewhere in the world. Those are the indisputable facts.
More about me, I have taught senior middle school here for more years than I care to remember, so I know what I'm talking about.
The poster I'm replying to has the username 'All Are Equal', but nothing is farther from the truth in the EFL world regarding the teaching of oral English. Perhaps the main reason one shouldn't trust entirely what that poster has written is that the grammar and spelling of his post are both rather poor, all be it he is deemed qualified enough to teach EFL here by the Chinese!
Hello to all,
I was very pleased to read your post because it did indeed serves as a warning for any qualify teacher looking for a job in that part of China. But i must admit i really felt insulted on your last words "Africans that can bearly mumble a word of English because they are cheaper". As they sound like that of a disgruntle white or what ever that had his or her job snatched
by an African. I just want to say some if not all Africans that have English as their languge can very well mumble words in English and not just a word but millions of words and some can even, and i believe very firmly not just mumble but speak out many words than you can.
I for one for example i have been teachuing English in China for motre than three years now and i do teach with Canadians, Americans and British alike as colleagues and believe me they do respect me as any other teacher. So please if you want to give a genuine warning to teachers about a recruiter or an employer, do so but aviod using bias and insulting terms for it will only make your warning or post sound like that of a disgruntle ex-employee.
Thanks.
I can believe what you said is true Jane. The same happened to me Jane in respect of deductions when I left the school. Sorry I did not post anything before to warn other teachers.
I worked at Hutchins school in early 2008. In this school is totally the sh1ts. Like many of the schools in China, any White face is a native speaker. I was totally victimized because as an experienced Native teacher, I would not kiss A55. Simon in charge of the school, has an American puppet, called Grace, working for him, who had sold her soul for a small amount of RMB. Anything Grace says is a load of bull crap.
hay i still work at hutchins.
there is also 3 other teachers here from the west.
1 has been here for 3 or 4 years
1 for one year and has just asked for a new contract
1 who is helping the school out by coming back for a few more months
me iv been here 9 months
and then all the Philippians and kindergarten teachers.
if i have problems with anything i go to the boss and he help me out.
as long as you dont take the P133 its good. but going to work drunk or hungover is not a good way to make the boss like you.
but you are right. it is all about the money in china.. after all if a teacher is loosing contracts for a school then the school cant pay the teachers wages.
there are far worse schools to work for in china, count your self lucky
What can i say.
Apart from the odd mad teacher that has come through the gates (to which a teacher that was here at the start has told me about when i asked) NORMAL teachers... good teachers are here and have stayed for more than 1 year, i will certainly stay on for another 6 months then move closer to my dad in shanghai.
Every school can have its reputation shattered by one teacher who though they were hard done by. I know a women who went to Oxford uni in england... apparently it was a bad uni. funny that the rest of the world knows it is a great uni, one of the best in england.
I used to own a BMW 318se in england. it was a bad car, i had problems after problems with it, however I would not say all BMW 318se's are bad.
Hutchins is fair if you are fair to them. I know Simon personally and he dose more for the teachers than we give him credit for..
You cant read one account and say that school is no good, The teachers who have been there for more than one year must have liked it or they wouldn't get a new contract.
Be fair Mr Hu
HI Trevor
1) You're correct that two wrongs don't make a right, and it is unfortunate that this fellow lost out on a lot of money. My advice to him and every other teacher is to make sure you get everything in writing, you can't rely on spoken promises and agreements as these often get forgotten about when pay day comes around!
2) I didn't mention the flight in my original post because i was trying to highlight that the teacher in question here was saying a lot of bad things about his school, while openly admitting that he had gotten into a fight with a student. There are a lot of posters on this site who seem to think that every problem is caused by the schools and their corrupt evil bosses; I would just like to present a more balanced argument and say that sometimes it is the teachers who cause trouble for themselves.
Happy National Day!
You got into a fight with a student in class...hmmm
I think you should count yourself lucky you weren't fired on the spot!
Joe, you seem to care not about that FT having been cheated out of air fare reimbursement because you don't even mention it.
Or do you think said cheating is justified on account of that teacher's unprofessional behavior in class?
But two wrongs don't make a right!
You got into a fight with a student in class...hmmm
I think you should count yourself lucky you weren't fired on the spot!
My manager at Hutchin School was this Chinese flake named Simon.
Please clarify what a Chinese flake is.
I had to change from L to a Z (working)visa before I could work at hutchin School. Total visa expense was 7000MB and Simon told me before I came to Hutchin that the school would reimburse me for all expenses. I looked at my final pay sheet and it was missing the 7000rmb they owed me. I called Simon and he said he never promised me that money, another lie.
The only promises that carry any weight in China are ones that are countersigned and bear the appropriately worded red-ink stamp. As you have unfortunately discovered, oral promises can't be relied upon, and can lose you money!
Thanks for spilling the beans online to forewarn any of us who might have applied to that school.
Hutchin School of Shijiazhuang definitely comes across as one to be avoided at all costs.
What you said about changing your visa type points makes me almost certain you got the position through an agent, probably one one based in Shijiazhuang. It's possible that your agent and your employer have colluded against you and split their ill-gotten gains down the middle. Please reveal said agent's identity and e-mail address for the benefit of any jobseekers who might be reading this post. Thanking you in advance!
Hutchin English School of Shijiazhuang is another disreputable institution to stay away from. My manager at Hutchin School was this Chinese flake named Simon. He claimed he was fair and impartial when dealing with foreigners but I later found he was just another tool.
I had a student try to assault me in class and naturally I raised my hand to protect myself. The student then claimed I tried to choke him, which is false. I had a room full of witnesses but Simon didn't care and blamed me for the incident. He decided to side with the school because he didn't want to upset the principal and risk the contract. It came down to money. Hutchin School puts money before it's foreign staff and education. So, I decided to leave Hutchin School. The end of the term was to be my final pay-day. The should have included my salary, airfare, travel allowance and the money to change my visa.
Hutchin English School cannot be called a school in the traditional sense. They don't care about education they only care about money. Go into the classroom and sing and dance or other. They want entertainers not teachers. Simon didn't care about results he only cared about happy paying stuents.
If your thinking about working in Shijiazhuang, please read IVAN YERKINOFF'S posts on the ESL forums. He is all about the TRUTH and he is right on the money with his assessments...
Jane
i payed 100 euro's to a company that put me in contact with the school.
I'm astonished you paid a fee to a company to fix you up with a teaching post in China. Not the norm here!
The effort put into this entry and the general tone suggest that the contents should be carefully checked, given that institution's past history.
Hutchins school or TTFL/TTLV
Top class, if you can get a job with them, do it. you wont regret it. they are very help full, any problems with the nice appartment and they send soneone over that day to fix it. i even had a new floor put in to my first appartment as the old one was crap.they have all the time in the world for you and will help in any way they can. you meet and stay in contact with all the teachers ther. big thubs up. would love to do a second year.
it may be hard to get a job with them but it is well worth the struggle.
i payed 100 euro's to a company that put me in contact with the school. best choice i have ever made in china.
TEACHING IN SHIJIAZHUANG, HEBEI, PRC.
I have worked in Shijiazhuang, Hebei for about a year and a half now. I know this school and all the foreigners that have worked at that school have had problems with payments(i.e. airfare and salary) and numerous contract disputes. That School is current being investigated by The State Bureau of Foreign Experts and by the PSB here in Shijiazhuang. So, stay away from Shijiazhuang I.T. college in the eastern economic development zone. This school will tell you anything to get you there and then once you sign that contract(a mear formality)your life will take a turn for the worst.
The schools and organizations that I have listed believe that the general government contract and their own addendums only applicable on your end. This is not the case my fellow teachers. Please, read the contracts carefully. I have heard many cases where the foreign teachers signed contracts that they haven't read in there entirety. The standard government contract was created to give foreign teachers rights here in China. Many schools follow the contract but many believe that you don't understand your position in relation to the school and they will prey upon your own ignorance but you have legal recourse.
The foreign teacher has the right to appeal at anytime to the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs for final arbitration.
Then we have New Times LTD. This organization brought me to China and then lied to me about having a job for me. First, they forgot to pick me up at the airport in Beijing and then they wouldn't reimburse me for the two night expense I had in Beijing. Then they got some college kid in Beijing to help me get a train ticket to Shijiazhuang where there representatives were late by three hours picking me up from the train station. This I could put up with but I was still angry. After they finally found me at the train station they told me it might be a day or two before they found me a job. I was really angry now, they told me I would have job waiting for me when I arrvied, more LIES.
They put me up in their company room with two other foreigners who were in the same position as myself. The room was a run-down cold water tenement that was infested with cockroaches. After two weeks of misery and constant flow of LIES from the mouths of the workers of this little dysfunctional inept organization. They actually found me a job at Middle School #1 here in Shijiazhuang. I signed the contract and moved in.
This school ended up being a nightmare. The FAO decided that all the foreign staff were second class citizens and were treated accordingly. We were never told any information about anything relating to school or the surrounding community. This was upsetting but it was China so I decided grin and bear it.
About half way through my first term the school decided not to follow the basic rules of the government contract in regards to accomodations(i.e. water, power and access to food) and they were violating their own addendum. So, I decided to call my friends over there at NEW TIMES LTD. to see if they could help me talk to the administration about my current situation. I thought they should because of the simple fact they were taking a percentage of my PAY every month. I assumed this was for any help we might need here in China. This was far from the case. I asked for there help and they told me a presentative was on the way over, well I'm still waiting. They had nothing but LIES for me and no assistance. So, I decided to leave that school and I found another job via the internet. I told the little cretin(Dou Songlin) that runs this criminal organization that our business is over.
NEW TIMES LTD. owes many foreign teachers the rest of their payments. Never work for the company because they will alter your working hours to satisfy there need for RMB. This happened to three of my friends at NEW TIMES LTD. and they will not pay you the full amount for your air-ticket. This recently happened to a friend of mine. NEW TIMES LTD. tried to take or withhold 2000RMB of his airfare reimbursement. The school told him they paid NEW TIMES LTD. 9000RMB for his airfare and NEW TIMES LTD. decided to pay him 7000RMB. This is a common practice at this organization. They have a well designed and constructed website but looks are DECEIVING...
BOTTOM LINE:IF YOU LIKE TAKING IT IN THE ASS THEN WORK FOR NEW TIMES LTD.
DELL ENGLISH SCHOOL here in Shijiazhuang is another school to avoid. They to, will not pay you for your actually hours either. They will also try to change the pay scale if they are running short funds. They will envite you come and interview with the school but they won't tell that you are going to a school with some other potential hires and talk in a auditorium for two hours and not get paid for it. They will LIE and tell you it will only take 20 minutes. Then they will take your picture along with the other foreigners and use that in there advertisements. This is now illegal for schools in China to do this without your permission and you must be compensated for the use of your photograph in a advertisement.
Then after using your picture without permission they will hire Africans that can bearly mumble a word of English because they are cheaper.
WELCOME TO SHIJIAZHUANG!!!!
