I myself had a similar situation with a public school. I was given a spare bedroom that I never used, and there was a smell in there that finally left after I kept the windows open for about...a whole season I think. The toilet seat snapped off after a week of use (and not from my weight I assure you) and I sat gingerly on the loose seat for the rest of the semester. The shower head broke off after I dropped it a week into my employment and I basically "hosed" myself for the rest of the semester. There were knats, mosquitoes, and some other insects that FLEW OUT from the bathroom sink drains so I clogged them every time I finished using them. Have heard stories from other foreign teachers of rats running out from shower drains while working in China.
