Yes, the crumbling wall paint in the corridor (picture above) is not a unique feature of the staiway.
In the bedroom the sole air conditioning device (which broke about every three weeks, and needed to be repaired for 10-15 days) was the sole source of both heat and cooling.
If the other room was not smeared in feces (as seen on the pictures of the same Huizhou "university" below), it would not be possible to heat or cool it with the same air conditioner under any circumstances (the apartment was kinda shaped as the greek letter Pi).
When it worked, the air conditioner leaked water on its own socket at all times (it could not be plugged anywhere else because the cord was too short, and the socket was positioned exactly so as to cause maximum damage from the leak -- see below).
Climbing to the 5th floor (no elevator, of course) up these flights of stairs. Some floors have functioning light, some don't for years.
