Re: Meten, Panyu District, Guangzhou

I do think Ronnie was talking about the people working at Meten. Do you want to tell us about your experiences smacking policemen back in the UK? Is that what got you to China in the first place? Haha just kidding. I merely was making a point to you to not troll.

That's so devious! Disgraceful. If they dared to try that with me, I'd land them all on the seats of ther pants!

Wow, would you, and what about if you're arrested by a policeman; or would you smack him one too?. I like to get involved with comparatively speaking low-level breaking the law, like working with an L or F visa, but I wouldn't be as daring as you.

Relatively painless work visa, if they give you a lot of trouble then it means they want you to leave

Meten, Panyu District, Guangzhou

I looked up some of the reviews for Meten and most of them are negative which is totally understandable, but I've had a much better experience in panyu. The school is new and opened up in November 2012. It's located in Aoyuan Plaza which can be reached from the Shiqiao metro station by bus 18 or 30. This makes it a pain in the neck to get to but the compensation is generous (12000-15000 or more depending on experience) and you get 200rmb for every student you get to sign a contract from your demo classes.

The school has its own set of text books. About half of the material is decent, the rest is garbage. But I just take the best and most useful parts and incorporate it into my lesson. I tell my students they pay money to practice their English with a foreign teacher. They can do the book on their own time and ask one of the teaching staff if they have questions. Most students appreciate this teaching style and my bosses don't seem to mind. There's certainly a bit more freedom at this center than the one in Tianhe. There is a scoring system for teachers which made me a little nervous at first but if you're a friendly and knowledgable person and don't go to class hungover then you shouldn't worry too much. I believe my score is currently a 4.75/5 after having 100 classes. There was one American teacher who was fired over low scores. It wasn't the scores themselves, it was his attitude towards them. He was a college professor back in the states and that's how he did his classes. A whole lot of input but not trying to get any output from the students. He went into a rage and melted down on a Chinese teacher when given some suggestions on how to improve. He's gone and good riddance.

I've been working with the school for 5 months and the pay has come on time, they got my work visa and reimbursed me in full, I've gotten my holidays, the teaching staff overall have been a joy to work with aside from a few childish people who were soon let go. The only bad things about it are that the school has two offices in the same mall on the 3rd and 4th floors. Classrooms are bigger on the 4th floor and that's where the VIP rooms are so moving between classes can be a pain. That's why classes are only supposed to be 50-55 minutes. Another thing is that the COurse consultants, specifically Edith (what out for her)will frequently over promise clients and then teachers have to deliver. Meten has a strict policy on children as well. No one under 14 years old. But the cc's signed on about 10 before the big bosses knew what was happening in order to make some quick cash. This has alienated the older students and I've now straight p refused to do demo classes for children. Other than that, it's not bad.
