Yes, by all means protect yourself - dead right there. I've forgotten the exact details, but I was surprised when you told me you had signed up with Helen. Anyway, you managed to extricate yourself out of a bad situation. That's the main thing. Such situations aren't confined exclusively to agents, as you well know. I think you'd agree with me that it's necessary for FTs to have enough cash available to flee a bad situation as a last resort. There are Chinese EFL employers who cannot be trusted - the trouble is that of course many expats only find this out when they're working for one in China! Over the years here, I'd say the employers have gotten worse, and I wouldn't blame you at all for avoiding China for EFL teaching. I'm sure your tslents will be much more appreciated outside of the mainland. I can understand that the cheating and the bad treatment that one may encounter here are both abhorrent to you.
