Re: Shandong University Jinan

I thought Shandong University was the best institute of higher learning in that province. Pretty sad to hear that they would pay you so low and treat teachers in such a shabby manner.

If you get hired at Shandong University, chances are you will be stuck teaching postgraduate students who are nice, but care nothing about learning English, and have almost 0% motivation to participate in classes, since they will never use English in the future. That's not the worst part of being here. You will constantly have to get massages because the furniture in the foreign teacher "guesthouse" is uncomfortable, ugly, and over twenty years old. Also, as an added perk, this year they started charging us for electricity, which can really take a chunk out of your salary because the water heaters, refrigerator and other appliances are old and non-energy conserving, so they're going to suck up more energy. The city itself is deathly polluted for about 60% of the year, and most of the people (native women), especially if you are a young, decent-looking woman, will stare you down everywhere you go, giving you evil looks and speak audibly enough so that you can hear about how ugly or fat you are. My biggest gripe, though, with this university, is the amount of workload vs. the salary. We finally got a raise this year (5600 RMB a month. Woohoo.), but it barely covers a month. I always have to borrow money from my parents because, forgive me, but I have to pay for massages and Starbucks, which gets me through the rough life of this god-awful city. Along with the last, biggest gripe, the FAO/personnel office does not care about foreign teachers at all, which is why our salary is late 90% of the time. (I damaged a tooth, but I have no way to take care of it today, because they didn't pay us today. It's payday). Just don't come here. All of us, except for 2, are leaving this year, and I would venture to say that most of those who are leaving would admonish you not to come here either. There are LOTS of other, better-paying jobs in nicer cities of China that are looking for highly-qualified ESL teachers.
