I like to chat with strangers on trains then my conversational/oral mandarin is good enough to do that. NOWHERE do I claim to be able to read or write han zi well.
Now, no, no, what we are talking about is rudeness.
Noisy fat chinese fella shouting 4 floors up at 7:50 am this morning could simply have used his lump of plastic to give his mate a quick bell, instead of shrilly repeating his name at the top of his voice, screaming his lungs out for all to hear. So while I think mobiles are a nuisance at times, especially on trains, they are a convenience and blessing at others.
Plus all that radiation is really good for your brain, it does not cause brain cancer, and may keep you sharp in thinking and make you slim? Sarcasm filter optional:D

I loath and detest mobile phones. I am outgoing and like to strike up conversations with strangers on a train-alas no need to chat with strangers these days because one has ones chums on the other end of ones self-indulgent lump of plastic. The good thing about the Chinese is that they at least will still chat with strangers- also a good way to improve ones Mandarin.

I think the sewer worker meant no harm, nor foul.
Many sewer workers in manchester like, it is a good profession, although me prefers teaching English in China personally like. Noone cares about mobile phones you see, and I like calling me mates on me blackberry that I bought for 50 squids in the rose and crown before getting me fake degree on cow san road in bangkok like. I also like me burberry caps too. And a strong cuppa of tea, and a few pints of the black stuff with the lads down the labour club on deane road of a weekend.

We have our own old English expert on the forum(see his picture before he was a teacher) because up in Collyhurst they still thee and thou all over the place "Take thee down to chamber eleven-take thy shovel, and clearest thou some shit that blocketh the storm drains" We should ask him.
