I don't understand....Ta dao di na li tong le? I thought "tong" in this case meant the character which represents "in the know". Maybe it's the literal sense of "tong" sina style :) ?

Yes, well, I thought that he was being strangely complimentary to me; however, you have maybe accidentally got it right. He should have said 'ta dao di na li tong le' which means 'What on earth do you know about China?' Get it? got it? good.

You seem to forget that Chinese media is contolled by the state, hardly an incentive for creativity.

There is almost none. Certainly Western entertainment has dropped off in quality compared to decades back. But at least for China the "heroic" defenders of that place cannot claim what is on TV is any better.
