Re: na wen, Eton British English School, Bayuquan

Thx for the history lesson re Eton.

No history lesson intended- I was just trying to make sense of the 'public'- and it does make sense, whatever we think of English or Scottish nobles and wealthy folk. I personally believe that the British system has served the country better than any other system could have done. We can now look forward to Shari Law- hahaha.

Clearly, to all intents and purposes it's a private school as most of its students will have come from upper class and upper middle class backgrounds. The old school tie concept will still hold sway, no doubt! Of course, a few lower class students will study there too on account of having won scholarships/bursaries for having excelled in competitive entrance exams.
Maybe Eton British English School is similar to England's Eton College because it caters for the offspring of rich Chinese people, all be it totally so. I don't think there will be any entrance exams there.

I

f a school in England is called a public school, it is in fact a private school. However, in Scotland a school that is called a public school is run by the state. I thought it worth stating the difference for the sake of readers who haven't heard of Eton Public School.

However, a public library in both countries is state-run, for use by the general public.

The term "public" (first adopted by Eton College) refers to the fact that the school is open to the paying public, as opposed to a religious school, which was open only to members of a certain church. It also distinguished it from a private education at home (usually only practical for the very wealthy who could afford tutors) and of course at the time the college was founded an awful lot of the folk who were going to be educated were educated at home, or in a religious school, and not in the public domain.

It's always helpful to hear another side of the story but I wonder about the connection with Eton Public School?
