Information Update on BiE:
I talked with them, but they still insisted on their lunacy. An update is an update.

1. 1,The workday is from Monday to Friday – 8 hours per workday. The teaching time is no more than 90 hours per month. If you exceed this, you will be paid 200RMB/ additional hour. Classes will be held during your work hours. When you are not in class during work hours, you will be expected to do curriculum research and development, correct students' assignment, prepare classes, ect.

2. ,2,Sometimes you will have classes outside of your allotted work hours. If that is the case, you will have the opportunity to take the equivalent amount of time off during the week, provided that you have no classes scheduled during the time. Most of the classes to be taught in our office, although some classes will be held in other locations. If that is the case, a TA will take you to the class location. Generally speaking, One-on-one classes will be held in our office while group classes will be held in outside locations.

3. ,3,On rare occasions you may be asked to hold classes in one of our branch offices in another Chinese city. This will happen if the demand of students exceeds the available supply of teachers and you will not be sent there for more than 1-3 months. The company shall pay for the resulting travel expenses and accommodation.

4. ,4,The base salary is 13000 RMB (pre-tax) plus 2000 RMB housing allowance. Your probation period is 1 month. We pay 80% salary during the probation period. We pay the salary on the 15th of every month.

5. ,5,Bonuses will be awarded if student progress and overall job performance exceed expectations.

6. ,6,We will provide a work visa (Z) for you after the probation period culminates. During the visa process, you will need leave China once and pay for any resulting travel fees.

7. ,7,Housing allowance will vary according to the rental costs in our different branches. If we provide you with free accommodation, we will not provide a housing allowance. You need pay for the utilities by yourself with living the free accommodation.

8. ,8,After one year, we will provide a maximum of 8000RMB airfare reimbursement.

9. 9, We will provide you with medical insurance and personal accident insurance.

10. 10,When you come into the company, we will provide you with a full training in our SAT system and proprietary methods.

11.,11, You will be given holidays off in accordance with China’s national legal holiday schedule. After the completion of one work year, you will be awarded 5 days of annual leave in your second year, and 10 in your third.

About the visa:

BIE will provide work visas (Z) to full-time teachers. The company will provide the application fee, however, you will be responsible for all additional fees such as paper preparing, delivery, travel, hotel, health check, etc.

The following paperwork is needed to prepare for the work visa application.

1. Original University Diploma

2. Non-criminal record (Can be provided by local police station)

3. Two years or more of work experience post-university graduation (excluding experience earned in China)

4. Color copy of the first page of your passport

5. Eight photos (sized 3.4cm*5.2cm) on a white background.

6. Health check report (Can be obtained in Beijing)

7. Color copy of any prior work visas.

8. Registration of Temporary Residence in Beijing.

The 5 steps for work visa application:

1. Apply for a work permit at the Bureau of Labor

2. Apply for an invitation letter at the Import and Export Bureau (5 working days)

3. Bring the work permit, invitation letter, and health check paper to either Hong Kong or America to apply for the work visa (2 working days, application fee will be provided by the company)

4. Submit work visa to the Bureau of Labor in Beijing (5 working days)

5. Interview at the Beijing Import and Export Bureau to apply for residence permit (15 working days)

They're an SAT prep center. I talked to them, it sounded OK. Got the contract and noticed: it's long. They have numerous fines for many things. One of them was as high as half a month's salary. Someone else told me that's illegal.

On Dave's ESL there are similar stories, including job offers that disappeared and being forced to apply for your own visas.
