Re: Opinion shared by a Chinese student

Right, I think we've got it - expats who live and work in Nanchang are not as clever as you; because, let's face it, you're an expert on these matters. You've certainly got Nanchang weighed up.

See, just because I now DON'T reside in Nanchang, I'm not allowed to comment or have an opinion? You should write for the China Daily, you could get paid well. Nowhere did I claim to have Nanchang weighed up! I simply differ in my opinion of the place from you and other expats who choose to live and teach there, and I'm free to write about it on here.

Nanchang, as you rightly assert, is the capital of an agricultural province and so would of course be filled with peasants. Your logic is impeccable, but what western foods or entertainment were you possibly expecting in the armpit capital of the world?

Well, I didn't expect to be dumped in hong gu tang, when I was told I'd be working in NANCHANG!? But recruiters never lie do they? They are impeccably honest, right? And Nanchang people are the salt of the earth. I'm sure they would NEVER mean to lie to a lao wai like us who is just in their precious city to teach English. Tell me what western food or entertainment it has beyond Mcds and KFC, which I don't even consider to be food in the sense of the word anyway!! I've been in cities smaller than Nanchang with far more on offer. If you refuse to accept or believe that, however much it hurts your precious view of Nanchang, then that's not my problem to deal with.

If you want my side of the story, we can go on via email/msn. I've not got a personal vendetta against you at all despite my dislike for Nanchang.

Thanks Migrant Worker,

Now if some expats could get it into their thick skulls that some Chinese people feel this way about Nanchang, then it is not just us western comfort seeking lao wais who feel this way. I've met many a Chinese person who seemed repulsed with horror when I mentioned Nanchang.

I've worked in countryside cities before that have more to offer, unfortunately Nanchang offers neither the scenic beauty of say Guilin or Hangzhou, nor the prosperity of Guangzhou or Shanghai. As a second tier city with no quality of life, I'd imagine those FT's who do stay in Nanchang and defend the place so vehemently, do so out of sheer bloody mindedness. Because I can't personally fathom any other reason why anyone would want to live there for 6 months or more?! Unless they know something we don't ...lol:)
