That salary is an insult! Absolutely! And not an insult to just a 40yo, but for anyone! 6500 is a bit low too, but definitely acceptable, especially since most recruiting companies hire for part-time (15 hours), with accommodations provided. But if you are around 40 or above and have retirement and savings in mind, you are very capable of finding a higher-paid job. You will need to work more hours, but that's how it is in the working world. China has various teaching scenarios suitable for all kinds of FTs. For those who wish to chill out, and diametrically opposite, for those who wish to make significant money. As you say, the latter requires longer hours of teaching and increased accountability.

That salary is an insult! At least 6,500 RMB for a light schedule would be acceptable, along with rent-free, unshared accommodation!

This sounds rather dire! LOL. And 4,000 yuan job is definitely NOT a good move for a 40yo. There is so much you can still do/accomplish at 40 and onward. People can still manage to build a very profitable career for themselves at that age, based on their present skills and experience.
What is with people on this board so bleak about age?? 40 is still fairly young! Nowhere to go but down? Please!

agree that esl teaching is not really a career. People should not be doing it to survive. Not everyone wants to marry though. A lot of western men in Asia just want a girlfriend, not to marry, fuck that!

Don't really agree on the marriage and kids part, but do agree on the not teaching in China part. If one is going to teach in China, it's best done and out of the system while in the 20s. Then go elsewhere in the 30s.

Teaching in China is not a career, so unless you had a career prior to arriving you'll be "moving on" to your FIRST career, in your mid 40s, your peak earning years.
And what quality of PhD program allows you to matriculate while in China?
Anyone over 30 and under 55 who is teaching EFL in China is either a refugee or an invalid. Halfway to your demise now, you should be married with children and paying a mortgage.

Woah, I'm 41 and teaching in China now but also in a PhD program so that when I'm finished I could move on to a new career. So, it's definitely not so dire! haha!

An interesting point, but I am somewhat the worrier. I wouldn't feel comfortable just earning 4,000 yuan a month, or even 10,000 yuan a month at 40. I always feel each year should be better than the last, even if that means a move to somewhere different, a different job, and so on. Thanks for your reply.

I am fifty and really enjoying China...might be dead tomorrow and you can't take it with you. Peace.
