If you are with ESL Starter, you might want to dodge this assignment, the North Campus of Xindu No.1 Middle School, located in Dafeng. The rooms remind me of low income efficiency flats, tight small bathrooms with the toilet up against the shower and mold growing everywhere. No kitchen, but does have counter and sink at least. The heat is inconsistent along with the internet (sometimes non-existent) and the hot water. (There are ration times for it. Anybody up for a 6 am shower on a Sunday morning?)

The liaison teacher is not much help. (Usually it is the job nobody wants and nobody is held to accountable for among the Chinese.) Meanwhile, they will try that Chinese tactic of bullying you with a threat of "consequences" when they want you to comply with something.

Teaching the kids is a mix experience, but if you are not on your game, they will treat the lesson like a social hour - again not support from the staff or Chinese teachers, a good number of which are snobs. In fact, one told her students not to worry about "that class", as it was "not a real class". One of our group understood the Chinese. You never know who is listening.)

Food in the cafeteria is lousy! But oh! Beware of going out to lunch alone with a colleague if you are female! One of the young teachers made that mistake and was sexual harassed. The school is a 20 minute walk from anything, and last but not least, the head master has been known through his lackeys to have the interns perform for visiting "real teachers" or the town, as a favor to the mayor.
