Re Dragon Charm in Changsha (AKA Work in China or Learnnig and culture in China)

Yes, you are right. They do change their name. Even in the (brief) period I worked there, they changed from Dragon Charm to something like Working and Learning in China to Work in China and they sign the contracts of different employees with different names a well. For instance, they present themselves as Dragon Charm but then sign the contract with Learning and Culture in China. Unfortunately, I do not have photos but, as I mentioned in the other post, they are the biggest agency in Changsha (the only big agency I know of) and their office is in Changsha (Ren min lu, near the railway station) and they are probably the only one that ask you to pay a deposit, which is illegal. As there are plenty of ESL jobs in China, just do not come to China working for an agency that will require you to pay a deposit and certainly not when it tells you to meet them in Changsha as well.

The company is owned by two sisters, Julia and Fei, who live in England and Australia, and they do/did the skype interviews. The manager in Changsha is a Taiwanese man called Roger, but, as he does not speak English, some girls in the office translate for him. The only one whose English is respresentable is a chubby Chinese girl with glasses called Stella and she occasionally does skype interviews as well. Again, however, the girls working in the office change quite regularly as well as they probably get tired of translating for criminals, but Stella is a keeper.

The most general thing that happens is that you finish your contract with them, despite that they do not help you, keep as much of your money as possible, and give you lousy accomodations, and at the end they will tell you to go home and that for some reason they cannot pay you immediately, due to "company rules". They will say that they will send your money (last salary, deposit, flight allowance) to your account, which obviously, they will not do. This is just the most general thing that happens. There was a girl who got seriously ill during her stay and, besides not helping her in anyway, after she had not been able to go to work for a week or two, they made her pay (a ridiculous amount of) rent for her apartment because she did not work. In the end, she had to go home, but they refused to give her the last salary or her deposit. Another scam of theirs is where they hire people when they do not actually need them, make them pay a deposit and work for a month, sent them to Hong Kong with fake documents to get a visa, and when they fail to get a work of business visa and return to Changsha on a one-month tourist visa and cannot finish their contract, they do not pay them their last salary and their deposit. As they are the biggest agency in the city and probably have some good contacts and immigration and the police, they can do whatever they wants and neither teachers nor schools stand up to them.

Despite the lack of photos, I hope this still helps a little.

The company has, I am told, changed their name. have you the names of the people involved. a company name helps but "companies" act thru people. having their name and photos would help better. cheers. sorry for the harm done you.

Yeah, I heard about this agency. Don't sign with them if you want to enjoy yourself or if you mind losing money

Scam Alert for ESL teachers Changsha, China

Be careful when you are considering for an agency that hires foreign teachers to teach English in Changsha, China. Most likely this is Dragon Charm, although they also call themselves Work in China or Learnnig and culture in China. It is the only large agency in Changsha, so, if you find yourself talking to an agency in Changsha, it is most likely this one. They provide you with illegal contracts, stating that you need to pay a deposit and cover your own insurance, both are illegal in China. In their contracts, they will also use false names, which will make going to the police a useless affair. Further, they will charge the school you work for monthly around 11.000 RMB and they will only pay you 5000 RMB. Last but not least, at the end of your contract, you will not receive your last salary, your deposit, or your promised flight allowance. They will tell you, you need to go home first and that they will put it in your account afterwards: they won't! Last but not least, throughout your stay they will put you in ridicilously cheap and poor accomodations and make your live as miserable as possible by, for instance, keeping all your documents, making it impossible for you to travel or to go to a hospital, which is also illegal.

The company is owned by two sisters, Julia and Fei, who do not live in China and mostly do the skype interviews, although some other employees do interviews too, such as at the moment girls calling themselves Mona or Stella or Lucy.

Do not sign a contract with these people! Beware of Dragon Charm in Changsha!
