I remember someone posted once if you want to be a long term expat in China you will have to accept you are shortening your life by 5-10 years on average. As you say food safety is a major concern, and even fake booze, there was a death of two young guys in Shenzhen, presumably from fake alcohol, which they would have assumed was real if bought in a bar/club, when it obviously is not, must be watered down with god knows what.

Also no concept of safety like you say, those AC technicians would go out a few stories up with no safety harness just onto a rickety looking steel bracket that holds the outside unit in place, I would rather have too much health and safety than none......
