My contention is that Russia paid the largest price for the defeat of Nazi Germany, in lives lost (total and per capita) which is the ultimate cost a nation pays.

The U.S. population then and now fail to see any special obligation in protecting England rather than France or Italy... or Germany for that matter.

The U.S. government is certainly not to be trusted. But the English government is not entitled to any special consideration.
