SCHOOLS AND RECRUITERS REVIEWS

Been Screwed - 2008-04-20

Yeah, don't work for them, at least not the one that opened up in Wuhan. Pretty typical in that it is poorly run and has a lot of 20 something kids working there who have no idea what they are doing. The director, a whopping age of 26, hired most of the women based on their looks, his words not mine. Basically your standard language mill.

In the month I worked there I was constanly harrassed to teach demo classes at the last minute, since they are a new school and have zero students. They would call me at all hours, 11:30 at night to teach at 10 the next morning, an hour before a class wanting me to come in. They tell you the demo is only 20 minutes and you'll make a 100 kwai. What they don't tell you is it is really over two hours, and you have to sit through the demos of 6 or 7 other teachers. Very weird demo classes, that's for sure. Lot's of distractions, the other teachers participate in the class, answering questions only students should, making it impossible to get feedback on the visiting students English level. You end up not knowing what you should cover, and the school gives you zero material on the students or what they expect insofar as to what they would like you to, then they complain about what you actually do. I did a total of 3 demos for them myself, one that went very well, two that were so so, because those two were almost all teachers, or their girlfriends who they had brought with them. The one that went very well was just students, big surprise. Overall a very unprofessional atmosphere.

The classrooms all have large windows, so the students get to be additionally distracted by the many gawkers outside pressing their faces to the glass. The teachers themselves have zero idea how to teach, at least the Chinese ones, so of course they have yet, after over a month, to get a single class going of any kind. What's very amusing is, that even though English is the number one language Chinese want to learn at the moment, after 6 weeks they don't hve enough students for even one class.

The last straw for me was when the two genuises in charge of foreign teachers, a Susan and Lisa, decided to call me while I was on my way to work to tell me they wanted to reschedule the class I was about to teach in 45 minutes time, from 10 to 12. I thought this was ridicules, not to mention the fact I had classes to teach elsewhere at 1:00. They said oh well, you either come in or your out of a job. Judging from the fact that I already had plans, and was on my way to work at the proper time for which I was scheduled, and they only gave me 45 minutes notice, I thought this was rather unreasonable. Ridicules would be more like it.

The other teachers have zero respect for foreigners, typical, and in turn once the first month of demo's were done and everyone got their pay checks, no one came back to do any more. Your typical shake and bake operation, but even worse then usual because the two who are in charge of all the teachers are inept, 22, and have no idea what they are doing. The oldest person there was 26, and the director. While age is not always a hallmark of experience, in this case it is.

Overall it was a rather poor exprience. Miscommunication was also a major problem, and most of the people there speak almost no English, and those in charge of Foreign teachers aka Susan and Lisa, don't speak it so well either, not well enough anyhow in my opinion, since they are lso English teachers. These folks will mock you to your face, bully you, and don't seem to have any idea as to how to deal with foreigners. Not a fun experience I'll tel you that.

I don't know about the other schools in the Younger Chain, but the one in Wuhan should be avoided at all costs. Administration with no magangement experience, unprofessional teachers and employees, total lack of communication, DOS ranks better then this place for those of you who are familiar with that school, and that is saying something.

When your on a bus for almost an hour and they wait until then to tell you class times must be changed, then there is a problem I think, that's bad enough. But when they expect you to drop everything and change your whole life around at the last minute for them, when they tell you that you either show up for the new time or go work somewhere else, well, you know your just a white face, and that you mean zero to them. That I might have a life, or other work I am committed to doing, did not even enter their minds I guess. Then they demanded, after firing me for not showing up for their new class time, that I make a special trip to return a text book that cost 6.5 kwai, that I had made a special trip for and bought myself. Oh yes, forgot to mention that they don't provide materials of any kind. They also don't provide translators of any kind either, and will just tell you to wing it when teaching adult learners. Body language and creativity can only take you so far, and my Chinese is not very good yet.

Bottom line, if you live in Wuhan and have seen an ad for Younger, stay away. They will treat you golden at first, but if there are any problems of any kind, the kinks in the proverbial armor will start to show. I was the only foreign teacher doing more then just demos, and look how I was treated. Bad place all around. If you have been treated better by bottom feeding schools like TDM and DOS, then there is a real problem with the school employing you, bigtime.
