Can someone really enjoy China (or any other place) if there is a need to beware? My answer is definitely NO as you will be definitely too busy to beware of all kinds of things. So, there is no time to really enjoy a place.

I think there are few countries in the world where you wouldn't need to beware of something. China is not so bad as some posters, including you, make out. One thing one should beware of here is an old goat who winges about most everything. I suppose you'll run into such a person wherever you go.

I gotta disagree with you there. Things are not what they used to be in that respect. China has changed for the better re personal liberties of laowei in recent years. The political system won't interfere in your daily life unless you are trying to spread religion or discontent among the local Chinese or your students.
