SCHOOLS AND RECRUITERS REVIEWS

Schools actually used to do that. Before the advent of the Internet, and the flood of foreigners to China, schools would do a lot more to entice expats to come and teach for them. Big end of contract bonuses, pre paid plane tickets delivered to you, better salaries, ad back then the salaries you get now were a heck of a lot more money. The truth is there was a time when teaching here in China was not a bad deal. Those days are long past, and I've not heard of people getting for sure end of contract bonuses for some time. Some few schools offer such a "possibility", however such rarely materializes. Heck, if you don't sign up for another school year you'll be lucky to get your last months pay nowadays.

Yeah I gotta agree Turnoi, it sure would be nice to get all transportation pre paid, now you'll be luck if a school will cover the cost of a cheap train ticket within China to get there. Part of the problem is the market becoming so flooded, part of it is the greed of school owners. They care so much about money that they often will hire anyone, regardless of qualifications. Such people are desperate I suppose and will accept lesser quality treatment by the school. When foreign teachers are a dime a dozen, why offer perks, even reasonable ones. Things were not quite as bad when I first came here back around 2000, and from what I heard from those who had been here a long time when I first arrived, well I can tell you things are getting worse, not better.

When you can easily hire a replacement why not treat people poorly? Eventually you will find someone who will take it, and if not, hey, the students pay pretty well already, and really, how long can it take to find a foreigner? Were a dime a dozen right?

I expect things will continue to go downhill, as the more and more people come from the economically depressed west. That being the case, there will be more and more complaints. If we were in short supply we would be treated far better, trust me, and if you talk to some of the teachers that were here back in the early 80's, you will hear a different story. There was still corruption and arrogance, superior acting, stupid Chinese bosses, but no where near the widespread abuse of foreign teacher we see now. It was just too damn hard at that time to find professionals, or anyone from the west, to come and teach in China at that time. Standards had to be higher for what was a burgeoning and very big money business.

Let's face it folks, the hay day of teaching in China is long gone, and we have to adapt with the times and make due. The current climate of abuse and mistreatment, scams and lies, won't be getting better any time soon. In fact I think it will get worse, looking at the trend over the past 2 decades, and isn't that a shame.
