Your understanding of the term "orientalism" is flawed by an American lens. Oriental simply means Eastern just as Occidental means Western. In the past experts of the Near Eastern culture and politics were called Orientalists. Americans look at oriental meaning East Asian, but Europeans look at the Middle East as oriental. For instance, here in Turkey popular music is called Arabesque or pop-oriental.
