SCHOOLS AND RECRUITERS REVIEWS

It seems most people here either complain or glorify their places of work. Complain I can understand, but I do find it hard to glorify something so heavily. It makes it sound like you are being paid to write it. On the other side, complaining only goes so far without reasons and facts. So I would like to start a neutral discussion on your experiences here in China.

I will begin, I have been working here for 8 months now, I will say that most of these so called training schools do take advantage of those people who are unaware of what to expect. They are expected to be treated like they would be in their country with the same level of education. Unfortunately these training schools do not warn you what you will expect when you get here. I brought enough money to last me 2 months in America. I expected it to last me at least 1 month here. I am assuming I would take time to view the treasures of China. I realized that things here although less quality actually cost more. Which can explain why so many people love to move to America. I should mention I am staying in Shanghai working for a company called Elanso. This company set me up for failure as far as living here. Most people have to borrow money from the boss to get started here. I did at least bring enough money to not fall into that trap. I have been offered no financial assistance for visa renewals. They won't even absorb the 20RMB it costs to file a paper? They set me up in an apartment that costs 2500RMB per month. Which they want 3 months paid in advance. Not common in America. My beginning pay rate was 3500RMB. I will let you do the math. Also they did not tell me I would not get paid for the first month of work. This was a serious punch to the face against me and all other foreignors I am sure have dealt with such things. Also they told me F visa was perfectly acceptable. It was a lie, legally you are not allowed to teach with F visa. You are required to get a Z visa in order to teach. Also was told that I would get all holidays off (American and Chinese) this one I did not believe totally. However I was told I could take the days off, I just would not get paid. Since I was paid so low, and there was not much to do for these holidays I worked. I sit at a desk and speak to students via phone. I was told we would use skype. this lead me to believe that I would see my students and be able to teach them accordingly. I found out later that I am not only unable to see the students face, but they are not allowed to see mine. Furthermore, I am not allowed to share personal information. I found out later on that they expected me to be a 40 year old Harvard graduate with decades of experience. To which I have to admit I am not. I am actually 28 graduate from a private school in America. I studied Business Administration. So you can imagine my surprise when I got such a great offer. Everyday I realize how much worse this "great offer" truly is. At this point I can't wait to go back home and re-evaluate my time here. If I come back I wish to work for an American company who will take care of these minor problems. Keep in mind there is a reason so many Chinese wish to attend school in America or other western countries. Most rich Chinese I have met, are all looking to work for a foreign company. They expect better pay, better treatment, and more holidays. This has been told to me directly. So as to make sure this is not my idea, but the idea of many students I have had. What I think is quite sad, many children here don't have any goals in life. They drift through and do whatever they want. This is due to the 1 child rule. So every child is an only child. Also men here carry purses and do the housework. Men and women reverse the roles in Shanghai. So this is another thing I can't stand. Women want you to wash dishes, pay bills, do laundry and carry their purse. while they go shopping.
In closing, yes the culture is different. However, when you learn the differences you realize they aren't that different. Not nearly as much as they claim. There are good and bad people in every culture.
P.S. try and keep this post and feel free to speak about your experience, but let's try to avoid the name calling and childish discussion topics. Thank you
