In response to hampson english guangzhou (basil fawlty)

You almost sound surprised it was so bad :)

They couldn't organise a ****up in a brewery. Very typical Chinese business mentality from the very top to the very bottom, emphasis on the word "bottom" because that is pretty much where they rank.

Hire anyone after a 5 minute interview and allow people to dress like bums. Have a one sided contract with clause after clause imposing fines for one stupid thing after another on the teacher but do very little when a student breaks the rules. If a student messes the school around and gets mouthy when penalised they shrink and allow it to pass expecting the FT to help them out of the ****.

I still think in some respects training centers have their place, otherwise they would not exist but this place has to be the WORST for teachers and students alike. When I worked there I saw more arguments between students and/or students parents with the school than I have EVER seen before an ALL were carried out in full view of the school and the building it was in.

They were always running out of materials in one respect or another and it took them forever to organise replacements leaving you either without books or without stationary.

They have no interest and no input into what is taught and how in general and only begin taking any kind of interest when a student is bold enough to complain and they are concerned they may loose the students fee. I have seen teachers sitting around in the classroom with their student playing computer games and watching movies whilst speaking in Chinese for up to 100 minutes, quality English teaching indeed. At the same time if the student is stupid enough to sit there and enjoy that and be happy to pay high prices for it then I guess that is up to them. Personally, if I was Chinese, I could think of much cheaper ways to play 100 mins of games and speak in my own language with a virtual stranger. Like an internet cafe for example.

Can't speak for ALL their outlets as I only worked in one, briefly. But if that one was anything to go by I don't see them staying in business. It's also worth noting that most of their so called teachers are employed on the wrong visas like students trying to earn a little extra cash or people on a tourist or business visa. I read that of those on the correct visa, unless working in Beijing, need to be on guard as Hampson do not have the legal right to employ teachers in any of their other centers. All the visas no matter where you work are issued in Beijing and therefore should be working in that city. If caught you will get fined, possibly deported and screw your future in China forever. No doubt they will get a slap and told don't do it again sat at some dinner they are buying for someone in an official capacity.
