Here is my review of a summer camp run by Oxford College.

I worked at Jeju International English Village (www.jejuevillage.com) on Jeju Island in Korea. They are owned and run by Oxford College. The reason I am writing is to let the internet community know that the managers of this village are breaking contractual agreements and actually breaking the law through their labor practices with US and New Zealand teachers. I hope that my experience can serve as an advisory to other people thinking of teaching at this camp.

Broken law:
The managers of this camp made their Korean teachers and foreign teachers work for two weeks straight with no weekend break, 12 hours a day. I have since managed, through a strike, to get overtime pay for one break day. No one else has been compensated.

Broken contractual agreements:
The bosses promised a New Zealand teacher that she would work 30 hrs a week, a contractual agreement that has not been honored.

The bosses promised a New Zealand teacher that she would work Monday through Friday, a contractual agreement that has not been honored.

The bosses promised a New Zealand teacher that she would have private accomodations, a contractual agreement that has not been honored.

The bosses gave the New Zealand teacher no warning that she would be coming here, and she is here on her vacation time.

Furthermore the bosses have screamed at New Zealand and US teachers, not to mention Korean teachers, causing us a lot of emotional strain and anguish.

This is just a rumor, but I heard from another foreign teacher that the managers of this camp used to run a Wonderland hogwan, which had been shut down because of poor management.

The previous time I taught English in Korea, there was none of this abusive behavior, so I thought it was safe to come back. I see that I was in error by coming back here.
