Just because Shandong might be bigger than the UK does not mean it's better. It has a few nice places, Qingdao and Yantai are ok, I would not say beautiful though, far from it. Any coastal Chinese city is not a patch on those in Australia, Philippines, New Zealand. The beaches are generally rubbish and dirty.

The biggest laugh I've heard is when someone said the Guangxi province had good beaches, a total lie, they are dirty, filthy and disgusting! Beihai is nothing but a dump.

As for Shandong, Turnoi is in general correct: It is mostly a dirty and polluted hole like most places in China.
