That's a shame, I kept hearing that Beihai was a good, secret lesser known alternative to ruined resorts that you see in Hainan. I was planning to check it out. I previously lived in Hainan and it seemed that most places were either ruined tourist trap dumps or rural farmer dumps.

Even Haikou isn't that great, despite being cleaner, more developed and civilised; huge parts of it are just a ghost town due to real estate speculation. Got to see an old friend there at some point though and I'll get to eat some really nice free-range Wenchang chicken with a chilli sauce that will just blow your head off.

Then again, Vietnam is just miles ahead when it comes to beach resorts and in some cases, it is far cheaper. Not a good place for Chinese people to go to at the moment though; so I can't really take the Missus next time.
