The ironic thing is that civilised Chinese people are turning their backs on such resorts and leaving them to the scruffy farmers that were lucky enough to make a few pennies here and there.

Chinese beaches are indeed awful. English beaches don't have the best reputation either, but bar the odd Clacton Jellyfish here and there, you get nowhere near as much litter.
