I also taught at GLV Hangzhou with similar experiences

(1) Pay is low about RMB 6000 per month when all other schools pay at least double

(2) As a "new teacher" you will work the afternoon shift 1:30 to 9:30

(3) The school is not actually in Hangzhou but across the river in Xiaoshan, the last bus to Xiaoshan is 6 pm. As you're on the afternoon shift good luck getting to Hangzhou. The subway is about a 1 hour walk from the school. It stops at 8 pm.

(4) The school will advance you a loan for accommodation. Good quality accommodation is difficult to get in Xiaoshan. The minimum lease is 6 months.

(5) As a "junior" teacher the contract states that you are on probation for the 1st 6 months. You can be sacked without cause and lose your airfare and bonus. Good luck getting help at a Chinese labor board.

(6) If your lease is still outstanding you won't get your money back.

(7) You will only get Chinese holidays and will be rostered to work weekends.

(8) The foreign staff are all British, old and male or Filipinas. If you're American and female ...

(9) As noted by the previous poster, the food in the cafeteria is inedible. There are a few noodle restaurants across the street and a big supermarket. There is nothing else as it is in the 'burbs.

(10) The train station closed down in 2013. If you want to visit Shanghai it is a bus ride and subway to Hangzhou Station about an hour and a half.

(11) As it is in the 'burbs there are no cabs. If you come back to Xiaoshan from Hangzhou by cab it will be a minimum of RMB 100. Hangzhou cabs refuse to go to Xiaoshan, they will drop you off near one of the bridges to Xiaoshan where you can get a Xiaoshan cab.

(12) You will mostly teach middle school children who have failed local middle school and need to pass English exams to study outside China.

(13) "Senior" teachers will "observe" your classes 3 times a week for a score of 5. If you score less than 4.7 your salary will be deducted and if you are still on probation you can be sacked.
