The History of Valentines Day
By:Shawna S. Ruppert

If you're a romantic in any way, then you're probably interested in some Valentine's Day trivia. The holiday is celebrated on February 14th, and is the only holiday that is dedicated solely to the notion of romantic affection. History buffs suggest that the holiday first gathered this association due to Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of "The Canterbury Tales", as his inner circle put an exceptionally high value on the ideals of love.

Although many people know that the holiday is named after important figures in the Catholic Church, what many don't realize is that there was more than one figure named Valentine. A Valentine's Day quiz might reveal that the date of February 14th belongs to two separate Valentines, both martyrs, Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni.

Valentine's Day trivia will show that "valentines" or love notes or cards to be given to someone whom you love, can be traced to the early 1800s. This is when the industry of producing Valentine's which were extremely elaborate in those days, began. The printing and sending of these cards has grown over the two hundred years and more since the tradition began. The estimates state that over a billion valentines are now sent every year.

Valentine's themselves have evolved a great deal, and a Valentine's Day quiz shows that the first were created using lace and ribbons. Later, they became mass produced paper cards. Valentine's Day is also the day of the year that the second most greeting cards are sent for (the highest being Christmas) this holiday is one of the major factors in the success of the greeting card industry over the last hundred years, most notably Hallmark.

There are other symbols besides cards associated with Valentine's Day which you are sure to see a lot of in the form of both decorations and the cards themselves. Hearts, flowers, the color pink, and candy are all typical Valentine's Day decorations.

It is interesting to note that because of its associations with Romantic love, Valentine's Day is also one of the days on which retailers sell the most flowers, and chocolates. Over the last thirty years, it has also become one of the occasions on which the most jewelry is given. This was due to a conscious push by the diamond industry to take advantage of day which was focused on love anyway; something that clearly had a relation to their industry.
