10 Graduation Gift Ideas
By:Wadzanai Nenzou

You can be quite creative with graduation gift ideas. After all, every graduate is at a crossroads in life, when new possibilities seem endless, and having completed their education, graduates are usually appreciative of creativity and "thinking outside the box," particularly if the result is something particularly well-suited to them.

Here are 10 graduation gift ideas, in a range of prices from expensive to thrifty, in no particular order.

1. A travel tour of somewhere they've always wanted to go. If your budget is sufficient, there's no time like right after graduation to enjoy a trip to any part of the world. When a young adult is either between one phase of education and the next, or between completing his education and starting a career, it's a great time to explore new horizons and try something new and exciting.

2. A mini refrigerator. Whether your graduate will be moving on to a dormitory or commuting from their parents' home, a mini fridge is a welcome accessory for keeping a ready stash of sodas, snacks, and microwave meals. Many young adults hang onto their mini fridge even after moving into their own apartment as a convenient second fridge for the bedroom or den.

3. Engraved jewelry. This can be as simple as an engraved "dog tag" commemorating their accomplishment, or as fancy as a special gold ring engraved on the inside with a meaningful message. This is the kind of graduation gift that remains a valued keepsake forever.

4. A flash drive for their computer. Practical gifts are more appreciated than you might think, particularly for media hungry young adults who spend a lot of time on the computer and on the go. This is perfect for the niece or nephew you love, but whom you can't afford to spend a lot on.

5. Hardback edition of a favorite book. Maybe they wore out their copy of The Catcher in the Rye or their Lord of the Rings books. A new, hardbound edition with a personal message inside the cover commemorating their graduation is a heartfelt gift that will bring pleasure and have pride of place on your graduate's bookshelf.

6. New wallet with cash inside. A nice new wallet can be a thing of beauty in itself, and with a little "starter cash" inside, it's an even more welcome gift, particularly for the graduate faced with paying back college loans and wishing she had a little "mad money" to spend. Nobody ever complains about receiving cash.

7. For your stylish graduate, or one who is about to start going on job interviews, a nice watch is a great touch for any outfit, casual to business-worthy. There are so many nice watches in such a huge price range, it's easy to find something suitable. And if your budget runs to it, having the watch engraved is a special touch.

8. A leather briefcase. If your graduate is about to start a new job, a leather briefcase is a terrific present. He or she can use it literally for decades if it's cared for properly, and a fine leather briefcase is the kind of item that actually improves and becomes more beautiful with age.

9. A netbook computer. For under $500 you can get your graduate a handy little netbook computer that's perfect for carrying around for use on the train, at a favorite coffee hangout, or at friends' homes. These little powerhouses do what the big power-laptops of only a few years ago did.

10. Photo album filled with photos of friends and family. A photo album with snaps from vacations, school dances, birthdays, and everyday life is an inexpensive gift that will be treasured more than you know. Even the most confident young adult starting grad school or a new career will love the chance to relive some of those moments from the past, particularly if he or she is to be living far from where they grew up.

Finding a graduation gift isn't that hard. It may seem that young people today already have everything, but there are so many personalized and useful things, that no matter what your price range, you can find something memorable, useful, beautiful, or all three, that your graduate will love and appreciate.
