How To Ease Your Little One's Concern With The Dark
By:Autumn Lockwood

At some point of their lives virtually every child goes through a phase where they're petrified of the dark. In some instances, watching a scary movie, reading a scary book, or hearing a scary story might lead to this behavior. Sometimes you might even find that a story on the evening news could be enough to frighten your little one. You and your child may not have any idea what exactly caused the sudden fear. Nonetheless, whenever a child is frightened of the dark, there may be a lot of discomfort, both for your child as well as other family members. If your child is fearful of the dark here are some tips you can use to help them to conquer their fears.

Determine the Cause

One good thing to do if your child suddenly becomes scared of the dark is always to talk about it with them. Even though they might not really understand their fear, it might be comforting to be able to understand that you care enough about it to ask. Don't ever tease your son or daughter or belittle them because of their fear. Instead, strive to discuss the issue in a very calm and collected manner, placing the focus on understanding and compassion. Sometimes all that might cure the issue is to make some changes inside their room.

The Fear of Monsters

Despite the fact that adults know that monsters are certainly not real, they may seem extremely real to the child. In order to give your son or daughter a feeling of control, then perhaps you can provide them with a bottle of "monster repellent". Simply fill a spray bottle with water, and add a bit of scent, such as a bit of peppermint, vanilla or maybe air freshener. You may then spray the area using the repellent before going to bed, giving your child the bottle just in case they want to use more at night time. You may also diminish your child's anxiety about monsters by reading stories including friendly monster characters. Encourage your son or daughter to color pictures or make drawings with the friendly monsters. It could help to showcase friendly monster artwork in a picture frame on the wall, as a deterrent for other less friendly monsters. Giving your son or daughter a small flashlight can also help.

Adding a Pleasant Touch

Redecorating your little one's room can often be a great way to defuse a child's concern with the dark. Get the child active in the process, permitting them to choose colorful accessories, curtains, and artwork that they really appear to like. You may create a confident aura within the child's room by placing some nice and cheerful artwork in red picture frames and displaying on the wall. You could find that there were certain room accessories that created disturbing shadows in the room after dark. If so, you might find that these particular problems disappear, by simply moving furniture around in the room.

Door and Closet Fears

Doors and closets often cause fear in kids. While many children become fearful when doors are open, others do not like it when they are shut. Speak with your child to find out what their preference is. One great way for making doors less threatening will be to hang artwork upon them.

Since you now know some ways that can help your son or daughter with regards to their anxiety about the dark, don't forget that it just might be a phase that they're dealing with. Go through the tips and help your youngster conquer their fears.
