What Is the Origin of the Engagement Ring?
By:Jason Chavis

An engagement ring is not merely a decorative object, but also a symbol of the union between two people. Throughout history, the engagement ring has been used to both implement the promise of a marriage and identify people as being part of a union. The origin of the engagement ring traces back to antiquity and has changed over the course of time.

Ancient Times
According to archaeologists, the earliest forms of engagement rings were made from rope. In a variety of tribes throughout Europe and the Middle East, these rings were used to identify a woman as a man's property.

Romans
Romans have been found to be the first culture to use actual bands to signify an engagement. Most Romans used iron rings to signify an intent to marry; however, evidence shows some were made of precious metals.

Considerations
The diamond is believed to have been introduced to engagement rings in 1477. Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg gave his intended a ring emblazoned with the jewel. This became prevalent among wealthy people in Europe.

Significance
As vast reserves of diamonds were discovered in South America and Africa during the 1700s, the basis of the standard engagement ring was established.

Effects
The industry of engagement rings grew over the centuries, becoming one of the most costly rings available to the public. The concept grew worldwide, establishing the connected business of miners, importers, designers and retailers.
