How Did America Get Its Name?
By:Pauline Go

The United States of America would have been the last found country; however, it has a great history. Right from how America was discovered to how it developed to be a super power there were several interesting stages.

America was discovered by Amerigo Vespucci, who was born on April 9, 1453. He was an Italian by birth and later studied the world maps deeply to become an explorer.

Amerigo started on his voyages very early in his life and he accompanied the Florentine ambassador to Vatican. He started making a name for himself early in life. Amerigo studied the east of the globe and was fascinated by it. He believed that he could discover a new route and believing his ideas he set out to discover this route. Amerigo was already a successful diplomat and later in 1492, his interactions with Christopher Columbus began. He was to finance the voyages of Columbus and that is how their association started.

Amerigo took exploration very seriously in 1499 after people started suspecting Christopher Columbus abilities as a governor. He joined Columbus as a managing partner on his two ships and they set off on a voyage to find the New World. In their journey of discovery, South America was the first continent they discovered. Amerigo, in his book called the Four Voyages, describes that he found and discovered the Americas. However, until today Christopher Columbus is considered to be the discoverer of the Americas. Also, Amerigo mentioned in his book that one fourth of the name of the continent should have his name in it. However, the map was made after his death and people doubt if he even got to see the world map. Therefore, there are serious doubts whether America is named after Amerigo Vespucci.
